Excerpt from The Mutual Inductance of Two Parallel Coaxial Circles in Terms of Hypergeometrical Series No numerical results were given by which one may judge of the degree of convergence of the series in a practical case, nor was, apparently, any comparison of the formula made with other expressions for the mutual inductance of two circles. Excerpt from The Mutual Inductance of a Circle and a Coaxial Single Layer Coil the Lorenz Apparatus and the Ayrton-Jones Absolute Electrodynamometer This problem of finding the mutual inductance of a circle and a coaxial single layer winding was first solved by Lorenz.1 Assuming that the current was uniformly distributed over the surface of the cylinder forming a current sheet he integrated over the length of the cylinder the expression for the mutual inductance of a circular element and the given circle. This expression is an elliptic inte gral. Lorenz reduced the integrated form to a series and gave the following formula for the mutual inductance of the disk and solenoid of what is now called the Lorenz apparatus. He called it, however. Excerpt from Mutual Inductance of Coaxial Solenoids Various formulae for the calculation of the mutual inductance of coaxial solenoids have been given from time to time. Although few of these formulae are exact, several of the approximate formulae per mit inductances to be calculated with very great accuracy by using a sufficient number of terms of the series by which they are expressed. We have collected a number of these formulae and propose in this paper to compare and test them, and to give their derivations in some cases where the proofs that have been given are incomplete or wanting altogether. This classic book helps students learn the basics in physics by bridging the gap between mathematics and the basic fundamental laws of physics. With supplemental material such as graphs and equations, Mathematical Methods for Physics creates a strong, solid anchor of learning. The text has three parts: Part I focuses on the use of special functions in solving the homogeneous partial differential equations of physics, and emphasizes applications to topics such as electrostatics, wave guides, and resonant cavities, vibrations of membranes, heat flow, potential flow in fluids, plane and spherical waves. Part II deals with the solution of inhomogeneous differential equations with particular emphasis on problems in electromagnetism, Green's functions for Poisson's equation, the wave equation and the diffusion equation, and the solution of integral equations by iteration, eigenfunction expansion and the Fredholm series. Finally, Part II explores complex variable techniques, including evalution of itegrals, dispersion relations, special functions in the complex plane, one-sided Fourier transforms, and Laplace transforms.

A "z pinch" is a deceptively simple plasma configuration in which a longitudinal current produces a magnetic field that confines the plasma. Z-pinch research is currently one of the fastest growing areas of plasma physics, with revived interest in z-pinch controlled fusion reactors along with investigations of new z-pinch applications, such as very high power x-ray sources, high-energy neutrons sources, and ultra-high magnetic fields generators. This book provides a comprehensive review of the physics of dense z pinches and includes many recent experimental results.
