Mutter, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was, a number of years ago, enabled to estab lish a triennial course of lectures on topics connected with surgical pathology, the lecturer being required to deliver not less than ten in the course. The following lectures comprise those delivered, in compliance with his bequest, during the season of 1890-91. In the selection of subjects no attempt has been made to follow a systematic outline of all that properly may be included under the term surgical pathology. To attempt this in ten lectures would have been folly. The effort has rather been either to deal with the newest phases of old and familiar doe trines, or to consider certain subjects not dealt with in works readily accessible to the general practitioner. In their selection the writer has simply followed his own notions of their importance or of his own facility for dealing with them; and for them, as for personal views expressed, he is solely responsible. He has not hesitated to avail himself of all current literature at command, and has endeavored to give credit to all to whom it is due. Any failure in this respect is one of unintentional oversight. Much of what has been gleaned from the writings of others has never before been presented in English dress, and the hope is ventured that the following pages may, on this account, be accorded a value which such original views or investiga tions as they may set forth might not confer. In making these additions, I have endeavored to adduce sufficient evidence for the general conclusions I have drawn, without encumbering the book with such a mass of details as would be repulsive to the majority of readers. I can hardly imagine, that a full relation of so many cases as I have referred to would be acceptable to any besides those who are engaged in the especial study of the subjects of the Lectures. To all who are so occupied, I will very gladly give whatever further information my manuscript records of cases can supply. It is an unavoidable defect of lectures on general pathology, that they cannot be conveniently used in the study of the diseases of particular organs. I have endeavored to amend this, in some measure, by a full index, referring, under the title of each organ, to the descriptions of the tumors of which it is most apt to be the seat. Most of the views found in these lectures have been floating through the journals for several years past; but, so far as the translator knows, they are not so fully presented in any book in the English language. The only work in our language on the subject was published many years ago; even the late editions are but little changed from the first moreover; the two works are, in most respects, entirely unlike. The fact of this publication going through four editions in Germany, and having been translated into French, Italian, Rus sian, and Hungarian, should be some guarantee for its standing.
