The life of legendary Swiss photographer Ernst Moiré is so shrouded in speculation that he sometimes seems more like a phantasm than the flesh-and-blood figure whose name will forever be linked with the well-known printer's error. Yet as scholar Lytle Shaw reveals in The Moiré Effect, when it comes to Monsieur Moiré and his circle, fact is often stranger than fiction. Tracking the artist from his humble Alpine beginnings as the son of a postal clerk to his fateful founding of a Zurich photography studio in the 1890s and his subsequent role in the lives of a number of curious figures--including the legendary Dutch architect Mer Awsümbildungs, the theosophist philosopher Rudolf Steiner and several members of the secretive Chadwick family--The Moiré Effect takes readers on a journey from the elegant salons of Swiss palazzi to the dusty bowels of ancient archives to a conclusion as hair-raising as it is oblique.

Who has not noticed, on one o~casion or another, those intriguing geometric patterns which appear at the intersection Of repetitive structures such as two far picket fences on a hill, the railings on both sides of a bridge, superposed layers of fabric, or folds of a nylon curtain? This fascinating phenomenon, known as the moire effect, has found useful applications in several fields of science and technology, such as metrology, strain analysis or even document authentication and anti-counterfeiting. However, in other situations moire patterns may have an unwanted, adverse effect. This is the case in the printing world, and, in particular, in the field of colour reproduction: moire patterns which may be caused by the dot-screens used for colour printing may severely deteriorate the image quality and tum into a real printer's nightmare. The starting point of the work on which this book is based was, indeed, in the research of moire phenomena in the context of the colour printing process. The initial aim of this research was to understand the nature and the causes of the superposition moire patterns between regular screens in order to find how to avoid, or at least minimize, their adverse effect on colour printing. This interesting research led us, after all, to a much more far reaching mathematical understanding of the moire phenomenon, whose interest stands in its own right, independently of any particular application.

This one volume treatise presents a comprehensive discussion of moire metrology analysis. The authors work from a new point of view, treating the gratings used in moire analysis as an artificial analog to electromagnetic waves, thereby comparing moire analysis with conventional optical methods based on wave properties such as interferometry. It is shown that for every interferometric technique in metrology, there is an analogous technique in moire metrology and vice versa, and that scientists involved in optical metrology have a real choice between interferometric and moire methods.

Following the worldwide success of his Poemotion trilogy, Takahiro Kurashima's latest book delights the eye with ingenious visual play Kurashima's interactive book objects feature graphic patterns that are animated by the reader/viewer with a special foil contained within the book, so that figures and forms are created out of optical overlays, set in motion and then disappear again. Here, an astonishing panorama of unseen moiré effects (i.e. interference patterns produced when an opaque ruled pattern with gaps is overlaid on another similar pattern) unfolds. Kurashima deploys the digital tools for his creations with tremendous virtuosity, while also evoking and alluding to the rich precedents of kinetic art. Moirémotion offers contemplative recreation for our eyes. Takahiro Kurashima (born 1970) studied at the Musashino Art University and since 1993 has lived in Tokyo, where he works as an artist and designer. He collaborates with artists from various genres such as fashion, design and music. Kurashima's series Poemotion 1-3 is known all over the world.

In Grid Index, Carsten Nicolai created a visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. Now Moiré Index is dedicated to his exploration of the moiré effect--a phenomenon that can be created by the overlay of lines. Although such interference patterns are mostly considered to be unwanted side effects, they are actually extremely interesting from an aesthetic perspective. Based upon years of research, Nicolai has analyzed and systematically unlocked fundamental structures of crucial importance to the visualization of data. As the first extensive visual compendium of these interference patterns, Moiré Index is the definitive reference book for designers, visual artists, architects, researchers, mathematicians, or anyone else who wants to use its content as a basis for graphic designs. A CD accompanies the book and contains not only the featured moirés as digital files, but also individual elements that can be used to create an almost endless amount of new overlays. These files can be used effortlessly with virtually any platform, operating system, and graphics software and can be applied in every field of visual culture.

The simplest, easiest, and quickest ways to learn over 250 Photoshop tips, tricks, and techniques! Scott Kelby, the world’s #1 best-selling photography technique books author, is back with a totally updated and revised new edition of his bestselling book How Do I Do That In Photoshop? This book presents an entirely new concept in Photoshop books—one that’s designed from the ground up to get you straight to whatever it is you need to do in Photoshop right now, get your answer fast, and get you back to editing your images in Photoshop. Photoshop has so much depth and so many features, tools, and filters that sometimes the things you need are…well…kinda hidden or not really obvious. In fact, there will probably be a lot of times when you need to get something done in Photoshop, and you know Photoshop can do it (because Photoshop can literally do just about anything), but you have no idea where Adobe hid that feature, or what the “secret handshake” or shortcut is to do that thing you need to do right now. That’s why this book was created: to quickly get you to the technique, the shortcut, the setting, or exactly the right thing, so you can do what you need to do right now.
Here’s how it works: When you need to know how to do a particular thing, you turn to the chapter where it would be found (Layers, Printing, Masking, Special Effects, etc.), find the thing you need to do (it’s easy; each page covers just one single topic), and Scott tells you exactly how to do it just like he was sitting there beside you, using the same casual style as if he were telling a friend. That way, you get back to editing your images fast. This isn’t a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed multistep concepts. This is a book on which button to click, which setting to use, and exactly how and when to use it, so you’re never “stuck” in Photoshop again. This will be your “go-to” book that sits within reach any time you’re working in Photoshop, and you are going to love having this type of help right at your fingertips.
