Excerpt from The Mercersburg Review, Vol. 10: Edited for the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marshall College; 1858 To find two articles on the subject Of Baptism in one num ber Of the Princeton Review, the leading organ Of Presbyte rian Theology in America, the one inquiring into the status, or real position Of grace, held by baptized children in vir tue of Baptism, and the other exposing the great sin that at least one-half, if not two-thirds, Of the children of communicant Presbyterians remain unbapnzed, is certain ly Significant. Considering the general silence and appa rent comparative indifference to SO important an aspect of the Sacrament Of Baptism, the articles, as well as the works on which they are based, indicate to us the Operation of some Special cause. This line Of discussion is not demand ed by any unusual amount Of Opposition from those who hold theories in conflict with the Confession Of Faith. There has been no formal attack made of late upon the Sa craments as administered in the Presbyterian Church. The Baptistic controversy has in a great measure subsided. It is not then from without, we think, that the discussion te ceives its impulse. The cause must be sought elsewhere. Excerpt from The Mercersburg Review, 1860, Vol. 12 It is a general opinion, prevalent in America, that the difference in the pronunciation of the Greek as it is spoken by the natives themselves and by strangers, who only learned that language through their study of the classical writers of antiquity, consists principally in the iotacism or the pronunciation of the vowel Eta and several diphtongs, as i or iota, thus producing a predominant i-sound, which seems unpleasant to the foreign car. But how great is the astonishment of the northern trav eller, when, on his arrival in Greece, he discovers in the pronunciation of the native Greeks an extraordinary vari ety of sounds and modulations of the voice and an emphasis, a quickness, an accuracy of tone and accent, altogether strange to his ear, and which he needs mustown to belong exclusively to the organs of a southern nation and partien larly to the spirited Hellenic race and which no doubt is as ancient as their language. Excerpt from The Mercersburg Quarterly Review, 1855, Vol. 7 This curious contest between Neptune and Minerva is rep resented in splendid colossal statues from the master hand of Phidias, on the western pediment of the Parthenon, while on the eastern was seen the birth of Minerva in the presence of all the gods of Mount Olympus. The earliest statues of Minerva were made of wood in the rigid Egyptian style, and were placed in wooden sanctuaries. But the Athenians, in their rapid progress toward civilization, soon built a larger temple of yellow lime-stone, ornamented with marble columns and painted in brilliant blue, black, and red colors, without any sculptures.
