Examines images of horror in Victorian fiction, criticism, and philosophy. Focusing on the recurring metaphor of Medusas head, The Medusa Effect examines images of horror in texts by Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, and a series of Victorian artists and critics writing about aesthetics. Through nuanced and innovative readings of canonical works by Freud, Nietzsche, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater, A. C. Swinburne, and George Eliot, Thomas Albrecht demonstrates the twofold nature of these writers images of horror. The Design of Biological organisms (forms) are determined by design codes. They are made by invariant proteins. The codes control all regulative processes that are involved in development and differentiation. All structural and functional aspects of a developed organism, the patterns of its reproduction, behavior and the potentials need it for its adaptation are determined by its design code. Design codes cannot tolerate mutations, thus no biological organism can be transformed into another. Mutation of a design code protein can lead to initiation of Cancer. New biological organisms can emerge through reprogramming of an existing design code. Design Code Theory, I hope, encourage the protein-sequence analysts to compare the sequence, the secondary, and tertiary structures of invariant protein to help establish a primary list of design code proteins.

In contemporary research, the supercomputer now ranks, along with radio telescopes, particle accelerators and the other apparatus of "big science", as an expensive resource, which is nevertheless essential for state of the art research. Supercomputers are usually provided as shar.ed central facilities. However, unlike, telescopes and accelerators, they are find a wide range of applications which extends across a broad spectrum of research activity. The difference in performance between a "good" and a "bad" computer program on a traditional serial computer may be a factor of two or three, but on a contemporary supercomputer it can easily be a factor of one hundred or even more! Furthermore, this factor is likely to increase with future generations of machines. In keeping with the large capital and recurrent costs of these machines, it is appropriate to devote effort to training and familiarization so that supercomputers are employed to best effect. This volume records the lectures delivered at a Summer School held at The Coseners House in Abingdon, which was an attempt to disseminate research methods in the different areas in which supercomputers are used. It is hoped that the publication of the lectures in this form will enable the experiences and achievements of supercomputer users to be shared with a larger audience. We thank all the lecturers and participants for making the Summer School an enjoyable and profitable experience. Finally, we thank the Science and Engineering Research Council and The Computer Board for supporting the Summer School.

This volume concerns the fracture and fragmentation of solid materials that occurs when they are subjected to extremes of stress applied at the highest possible rates. The plan for the volume is to address experimental, theoretical, and com putational aspects of high-rate dynamic fracture and fragmentation, with emphasis on recent work. We begin with several chapters in which the emphasis falls on experimental methods and observations. These chapters address both macroscopic responses and the microscopic cause of these re sponses. This is followed by several chapters emphasizing modeling-the physical explanation and mathematical representation of the observations. Some of the models are deterministic, while others focus on the stochastic aspects of the observations. Often, the ov\!rall objective of investigation of dynamic fracture and fragmentation phenomena is provision of a means for predicting the entire course of an event that begins with a stimulus such as an impact and proceeds through a complicated deformation and fracture pro cess that results in disintegration of the body and formation of a rapidly expanding cloud of debris fragments. Analysis of this event usually involves development of a continuum theory and computer code that captures the experimental observations by incorporating models of the important pheno mena into a comprehensive description of the deformation and fracture pro cess. It is to this task that the work of the last few chapters is devoted.
