An engineering handbook that explains all technical aspects of webs, long thin sheets of materials, such as paper, plastic films, foils, and textiles that are wound into rolls, often after being laminated, printed, or coated. Topics covered include: tension control, roller mechanics, drives, brakes, nip control, guides, spreaders, slitters, and more. The book illustrates engineering principles with shop-floorexamples and provides easy-to-understand calculations that control how web systems are designedand operated, and how webs of many different materials can be made to move efficiently over a varietyof rollers. These tools are meant to help industry specialists troubleshoot and correct defects suchas wrinkles, bagginess, curl, and misshapen wound rolls. As part of web handling the book providesextensive details on many roll-to-roll converting operations, such as calendering, coating, laminating, and printing.

Rolling is an important metal forming process which involves the passing of metal stock through a pair of rollers. It is categorized depending on the recrystallization temperature of the metal rolled. This book covers the entire gamut of rolling technology in one volume. It begins with a brief history of rolling, and goes on to discuss different rolling processes, the deformation of materials, and the classification of rolling mills and stands. The book discusses rolling applications of steel blooms, slabs, bars, plates, rods, heavy sections and non-ferrous metals in detail. It covers important rolling process parameters, including rolling friction, stress and strain across rolled strip thickness, rolling torque and power and roll separation force. It also provides details on the design and applications of various rolling equipment, including mill rolls, neck bearings, spindles, coilers and decoilers.

This treatise is concerned with the stresses and deformation of solid bodies in contact with each other, along curved surfaces which touch initially at a point or along a line. Examples are a railway wheel and rail, or a pair of gear wheel teeth. Professor Johnson first reviews the development of the theory of contact stresses since the problem was originally addressed by H. Hertz in 1882. Next he discusses the influence of friction and the topographical roughness of surfaces, and this is incorporated into the theory of contact mechanics. An important feature is the treatment of bodies which deform plastically or viscoelastically. In addition to stationary contact, an appreciable section of the book is concerned with bodies which are in sliding or rolling contact, or which collide.
