Piper knows exactly what she wants out of life and how to get it. That’s the one thing that hasn’t changed since her family was snatched away to an American sweatshop by Cascadia’s usurping vice president. But now that she and her friends have thwarted an assassination attempt, performed life-saving surgery, and led a revolution, she’s discovering just how much those experiences have transformed her. For one thing, she’s learned to trust Logan with her heart. For another, she’s finally become a team player. But she’s also developed a deep and unbreakable bond with President Cooper, and while that’s mostly a good thing, there’s no denying that the responsibility she feels for him is also a profound burden. Piper’s friends, her mentor, and even the president have said it’s time to stop worrying about him and focus on herself. But after holding his life in her hands, Piper can’t imagine how she’d do that. Worse, she may not have much say in the matter. As rescue plans come together, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: in order to regain her family, Piper might have to abandon her friendship with President Cooper altogether. The McCall Initiative is a story told in serial form. If you’re a fan of edge-of-your-seat dystopian thrillers with a twist of romance, you’ll love Lisa Nowak’s glimpse at a future that’s all too plausible. Great for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Legend. Get it now.

Piper knew she was violating her Junior Student Assistant contract by treating the president’s gunshot wound. Still, it’s a complete shock when she’s kicked out of the program. While her mentor believes there’s hope, it hinges on Piper going before the medical board to plead her case. If she fails, she’ll lose her position … and potentially any chance of getting into med school. While she’s managed to stay strong since the rescue team returned from FreedomCorp with her little brother, her best friend Bailey fears that Piper is in denial about the deaths of her mom and grandpa. Logan and Jefferson come to agree as Piper struggles to maintain her optimism at the expense of reality. But what can they do to help when she insists on pushing them away? The McCall Initiative is a story told in serial form. If you’re a fan of edge-of-your-seat dystopian thrillers with a twist of romance, you’ll love Lisa Nowak’s glimpse at a future that’s all too plausible. Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
