Excerpt: ... as " the most remarkable event of the occasion," and which voices the astonishment and pleasure it feels in the following editorial: "Father Malone at a Purim Ball! What next? No wonder that, as the Father says, several ignorant Williamsburghers have had 'their eyes opened since Thursday last.' That a rigid priest should patronize a Jewish ball, in honor of a peculiar Jewish festival, is something unheard-of in this age of liberality. The sentiments expressed by the worthy Father did every credit to his head and heart, and his visit cannot but be productive of real good in the community." The good feeling then engendered continued, and as the annual reunions recurred, members of the Hebrew Benevolent Society attended the St. Patrick's Day banquet, and Friendly Sons did not fail to be present at the Purim Ball and listen to the word of good cheer in a letter from Father Malone, who almost became the chaplain of the one as he was already the chaplain of the other. In one of these letters (March 21, 1873) to Mr. Moses Kessel, the president, Father Malone, after regretting, "because of the exhaustive nature of my duties in the church to-night" (it being in the Lenten season), " my inability to be present and celebrate with you one of the great historic events of your most wonderful people," concludes as follows: "In this great country we should be united socially as well as civilly as one national family. The prejudices engendered in minds that come among us from the other side of the Atlantic, prejudices of race and creed, should have no recognition among citizens of this free republic. I regret the more my inability to be among you, as I wish always to give practical expression to my sincere conviction of fraternal sympathy and good wishes...
