From one man’s Hackney market stall to a company serving fifty million customers in thirteen countries every week, this is the extraordinary story of one of Britain’s most remarkable companies. Told by those who themselves feature in it – Tesco’s own employees – it relates a fascinating social history as well as an epic business venture. Drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with Tesco staff, collected by National Life Stories at the British Library, these personal accounts from across the decades are frank, insightful, sometimes funny and, above all, very human. How, then, did Tesco grow from Jack Cohen’s barrow in Hackney to the hypermarkets in Hungary and Thailand and a home-delivery service to customers from Cheshire to the Czech Republic? Why and how did Tesco survive and (mostly) thrive where other British companies stalled? And what impact has Tesco’s success had on its employees and consumers? Here is Tesco’s authentic story, carefully researched and engagingly written by Sarah Ryle, told for the first time by the people at the very heart of the business.

WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER 2022 NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS FINALIST — BUSINESS: GENERAL • 2022 AXIOM BUSINESS BOOK AWARD GOLD MEDALIST — LEADERSHIP "Critically important reading as our economy struggles to recover the pandemic's deleterious economic impact that is currently compounded by supply chain issues and the beginnings of an inflationary spiral." —The Midwest Book Review "Provides concrete steps leaders and employees can take to thrive in today’s marketplace, where taking a stand on something important to your customers can become a competitive differentiator." —Forbes Discover an urgent prescription for a new business paradigm—one that better serves humanity and the planet. The global coronavirus pandemic has thrown into stark relief how “business as usual” is no longer serving us. The economic, business, and environmental models of the past do not reflect our current realities. And for our economy—for us—to survive, we need nothing less than a seismic shift in the way we do business. Enter Simon Mainwaring, New York Times-bestselling author and founder and CEO of We First. A decade ago, he showed how business leaders and consumers could use social media to build a better world in We First. Now, after decades of research and field experience at the vanguard of the world’s most successful brand revolutions, he provides in Lead With We a blueprint for doing business better in today’s challenged world. By leading with “we”—putting the collective above the individual, holding the sum above the parts, and emphasizing the importance of the role that everyone plays—you can not only help solve the escalating challenges of today but also unlock extraordinary growth for your business, and abundance on our planet. Timely and compelling, this book’s message is simple: The future of profit is people’s purpose, aligned. Lead With We not only examines why we must all conduct business differently in order to grow in today’s market, but provides the how—concrete steps any reader, wherever they find themselves in the business hierarchy, can take toward success.

Group taxation – special schemes according to which a group of companies meeting certain requirements may be assimilated for tax purposes to a single company – exists in several European Member States and is now under consideration in an EU proposal concerning a common consolidated corporate tax base (CCCTB). Its rationale as a potential EU tax regime has arisen from a series of high-profile ECJ cases concerning cross-border tax relief claims – decisions which have been criticized for lack of clarity and for breach of freedom of establishment (Article 49 TFEU). Group taxation has now become one of the most intensively debated issues in EU tax law. The papers collected in this timely book derive from an ACTL Seminar held at Amsterdam in April 2010. The thirteen authors are either well-known practitioners from major law firms and accounting firms, or noted European tax scholars, or both. Among the central issues covered in the book are the following: the underlying tax obstacles which exist for companies operating in more than one Member State; potential for tax avoidance; prevention of double use of losses (the ‘no possibilities’ test); disadvantages that arise as a consequence of the parallel exercise of fiscal sovereignty; the concept of ‘balanced allocation of taxing powers’; meaning of ‘final losses’; the ‘Bosal fix’; cash-flow disadvantages of having to carry losses forward; deduction of currency losses; deduction-and-recapture rules; and VAT grouping.

What went wrong and how have things improved? In new chapters covering the Philip Green bid and the Stuart Rose recovery plan, and covering the Christmas 2006 trading figures, Judi Bevan reveals all.
