Excerpt from The Livestock and Wool Situation, Vol. 34: February 1945 Hog slaughter in January and February dropped sharply, compared with a year earlier, reflecting the great reduction from a year earlier in hog numbers on hand at the beginning of 1995, and delayed marketings as hogs were being fed out to'heavy weights. An estimated million hogs were 0h farms on January I, 1995. This was a reduction of 28 percent from the record.pumber at the beginning of 1999, a percentage decrease exceeded only in the drought year i93u. The marked reduction in numbers January 1 followed a329 percent decrease in the total number of pigs saved in 19th, compared with l9u3, The spring pig cr0p of 1999 totaled 55.million head, 25 percent 1ess than the record 1993 cr>p of million head. The 199 fall pig cr0p was about two-thirds; as large as the record 1993 crop which totaled M7,7 million head. In November the support price became the top price as a rule. In order to clarify the support level at various places, an order was issued setting this level at $1 under the cpa price ceiling beginning November 29, 19h}.
