The Little Bayou Mermaid is a children's picture book told in verse about a mermaid named Aqualina, who lives in the swampy lagoon. She becomes friends with a Cajun Boy named Remy, when he untangles her fin from a fish net. She asks him to read his school books to her, so she can learn about the outside world. When he sees her eyes light up with the new knowledge, this makes him want to become a teacher. When summer is over, he has to go to college far away from the bayou, but he promises to return. When he doesn't come back, the Little Bayou Mermaid uses the knowledge that she learned in books to find him. That's when she discovers that he had an accident and lost his memory of her. When she came to mind at times, he thought she was just a dream. So, she wonders if she should tell him that she is real.
