Thirteen academics, mostly American, from English and political science departments, address such topics as merit and intelligence in the works of Charlotte Bronte, the transformation of English studies through Joyce's Ulysses, the adult learner in Educating Rita, literacy in 19th-century America, education and decolonization in John Saunana's Melanesian novel, The Alternative, the ambiguity of education in Anglophone Caribbean fiction, and the bildungsroman in African postcolonial fiction.
