Excerpt from The Life of Sir Philip Sidney In telling the story, however, I have constantly tried to remember that details find their chief value in the degree in which they throw new light on the character or amplify the conceptions which we have already formed. In one of his letters Mr George Meredith writes: We cannot come to the right judgment in Biography unless we are grounded in History. It is knowledge of the World for the knowing of men. Question the character, whether he worked, in humanity's mixed motives, for great ends, on the whole: or whether he inclined to be merely adroit, a juggler for his purposes. Many of the famous are only clever interpreters of the popular wishes. Real great ness must be based on morality. These platitudes are worth keeping in mind. I have tried to keep in mind similar con siderations and to deduce as just an estimate from the facts as possible. To my late colleague and friend, Professor George S. Stevenson, I am indebted for the deep interest which he took in my work, for many helpful suggestions, and for reading the proof of the first half of the book. It is a melancholy pleasure to record here my sense of the supreme loss which his death means to his friends and to the university. In preparing the Notes on Sidney's Portraits I am much indebted to the courtesy and wide knowledge of Mr Milner of the National Portrait Gallery. Excerpt from Life of Sir Philip Sidney Renowned Sir phitip Sidney (with Other matters; see the title-page), was given to it presumably by the unknown P. B., the editor, certainly not by Greville himself In a manuscript copy of the work, of which we shall hear more hereafter, the title is simply A Dedication and Greville's primary oh Jcet was to dedicate his poems, 'these exer cises of my youth, ' as he calls them, to that Worthy Sir Philip Sidney, so long since departed.' The Dedication spreads out, in' the unchannelled abundance of our earlier prose and the retired soliloquizing of Greville's older age, into a 'treatise in which the primary object is clean forgotten in the rush of the writer's memory of those two subjects. Excerpt from The Life and Times of Sir Philip Sidney The great banqueting hall was curiously dec orated with grotesque figures that supported the roof, and its fireplace, encased in a frame of iron, is said to have had strength and capacity enough to hold huge piles of wood, and nearly sufficient. To sustain the trunk of a giant tree The stairs were formed of vast blocks of solid oak, and the floors of many of the state apartments were of massive planks from the same royal wood. The spacious portrait gallery was, in the latter part of the last century, adorned with curious and rare historical pictures, and also with portraits, some of them by Holbein, of the Sidneys and Dudleys, and of the monarchs who were their friends and patrons. There were the counterfeit present ments of Sir Philip Sidney, and of his sister, the Countess of Pembroke, the subject of Jonson's noted epitaph.
