From the author of The History of the World in 100 Animals, a BBC Radio Four Book of the Week, comes an inspirational new book that looks at the 100 plants that have had the greatest impact on humanity, stunningly illustrated throughout. As humans, we hold the planet in the palms of ours hands. But we still consume the energy of the sun in the form of food. The sun is available for consumption because of plants. Plants make food from the sun by the process of photosynthesis; nothing else in the world can do this. We eat plants, or we do so at second hand, by eating the eaters of plants. Plants give us food. Plants take in carbon dioxide and push out oxygen: they give us the air we breathe, direct the rain that falls and moderate the climate. Plants also give us shelter, beauty, comfort, meaning, buildings, boats, containers, musical instruments, medicines and religious symbols. We use flowers for love, we use flowers for death. The fossils of plants power our industries and our transport. Across history we have used plants to store knowledge, to kill, to fuel wars, to change our state of consciousness, to indicate our status. The first gun was a plant, we got fire from plants, we have enslaved people for the sake of plants. We humans like to see ourselves as a species that has risen above the animal kingdom, doing what we will with the world. But we couldn’t live for a day without plants. Our past is all about plants, our present is all tied up with plants; and without plants there is no future. From the mighty oak to algae, from cotton to coca here are a hundred reasons why.

Renowned as a peerless teacher, practitioner, and scholar, Longchenpa thoroughly studied and mastered every one of the many Buddhist vehicles and lineages of teachings existing in Tibet at his time. Through his radiant intellect and meditative accomplishment, in both his teachings and written works, he was able to reconcile the seeming discrepancies and contradictions between the various presentations of the view and the path within the many lineages of transmission. His written works are also famous for being able to transfer true blessings just by reading or hearing his enlightened words. Compiled from numerous Tibetan and Bhutanese sources, including Longchenpa’s autobiography, and stories of his previous lives and subsequent rebirths, The Life of Longchenpa weaves an inspiring tale of wonder and magic, of extraordinary visions and spiritual insight, set in the kingdoms of fourteenth-century Tibet and Bhutan. It also reveals for the first time fascinating details of his ten years of self-exile in Bhutan, stories that were unknown to his Tibetan biographers.

From the 1950's onward the Buddhist philosophy has grown in our Western world. This philosophy underlies one of the oldest spiritual practices on earth, the faith of compassion and peaceful means. The reason for its existence is to enable all people to Realize a Personal Way to end suffering. It is complex, yet simple and profound. It offers important principles to the higher Worlds of wisdom and the meaning of enlightenment. While scholars differ on his birth date, it is suggested the historical Buddha of India, Shakyamuni, was an awakened One, almost 3,000 years ago. His time on earth is known as the Former Day of the Law. In the Middle ages the Great Scholar, Teacher and Chinese Priest,Tien Tai ChiI [538 - 597 c.e.] of China, brought together all the various Buddhas Sutra or wisdom teachings and brought them into a encyclopaedic and academic whole. Going beyond the theory and doctrine, he declared the Buddhas highest teachings were to be found in theScripture of the Lotus Blossom of the Fine Dharma. This greatly affected the Mahayana Tradition. He then went on to explain how the universe works, in the concept of NOW, Ichinen Sanzen. This time is known as the Middle Day of the Law. In 1222 c.e. [common era ], a fishermans son was born. His name was Zennichi-maro. Like many first sons of his day, at the age of 12 he was sent off to learn and be the spiritual guide for the family. After attaining status as a Priest he spent many years studying the suffering and plague that was ravishing Japan in his time. He studied all the various Buddhist doctrine and theology realizing that Shakyamuni of India, Tien Tai of China and Dengyo Daishi [767-822 c.e.] of his own country were correct in their predictions that a time would arrive when the Buddha-way would be open to all Beings regardless of their lifestyle, culture or country. The time was and is our current Latter Day of the Law. Within the pages of this offering you will find the tools and actual proof needed for widening the doors of your Spiritual Health.
