Excerpt from The Life of Barnave, Vol. 2 of 2 To pardon everything would be no less imprudent, and there would be no motives for it. Public officials who forget their most sacred duties in critical times, leaders of the people who defy the law knowing what the consequences of their actions will be, deserve no indulgence. To grant it would be to encourage resistance. Our indulgence towards them would not be humanity, it would be a real crime against justice. Excerpt from The Life of Barnave, Vol. 1 of 2 This book is the result of an inquiry begun entirely to satisfy myself and without any idea of where it would lead me; my reasons for attempting to write will be found in the Introduction. As I knew from the outset that I could only hope to get at the truth from documents of the period, I turned to these at once, and on these alone I have based my opinions. There is hardly an event in the French Revolution which has not given rise to a controversy, and a writer who treats of a subject connected with it must needs be dogmatic at times or his work would be interminable. It is only in some cases that he can present the arguments for the conclusions he has formed; in others he has to state his conclusions without doing the justice he would Wish to opinions which he does not hold. All that he can do is to try honestly to understand other points of view, and to hope that his readers will not think that he has failed to appreciate what may be said for them. It is, I fear, certain that, in spite of care, there must be many errors and inaccuracies in a book like this, and for all these I would beg forgiveness. There must also be omis sions it is probable that some of the documents in the Archives Nationales to which I have given no other reference have been published, though I have not come across them, that informa tion which I found in newspapers and pamphlets has been used in books which have appeared lately and which I have not read; but I think that wherever I owe a debt I have acknowledged it by a reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Barnaby Rudge, Vol. 1 of 2 The raven in this story is a compound of two great origi nals, of whom I have been, at different times, the proud possessor. The first was in the bloom of his youth, when he was discovered in a modest retirement in London, by a friend of mine, and given to me. He had from the first, as Sir Hugh Evans says of Anne Page, good gifts, which he improved by study and attention in a most exemplary manner. He slept in a stable - generally on horseback - and so terrified a Newfoundland dog by his preternatural sagacity, that he has been known, by the mere superiority of his genius, to walk off unmolested with the dog's dinner, from before his face. He was rapidly rising in acquirements and virtues, when, in an evil hour, his stable was newly painted. He observed the workmen closely, saw that they were careful of the paint, and immediately burned to possess it. On their going to dinner, he ate up all they had left behind, consisting of a pound or two of white lead; and this youthful indis cretion terminated in death. Excerpt from Rombert, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale of Carolina The constitution framed by him, taken as a whole, exhibits the hand of a philosopher, but it also exhibits much inconsistency, when viewed in connection with his other works. For instance, when it is considered that he wrote a treatise on government so liberal in its tendency as to call forth the spleen of numbers who maintained the divine right of rulers, and the duty of passive obedience in the subject, it appears singular that he should have endeavoured, by his constitution for Carolina, to create a nobility, and to give to every freeman absolute authority over his negro slaves. The very circumstance of a man of such eminent talents and profound views as John Locke having been the author of this incongruous constitution, places in a strong light the utter inability of legis lating at three thousand miles distance for a peo ple in a new country, with whose wants it is impos sible that the lawgiver should be fully acquainted. The truth of this is proved by the well-known fact, that the colonists never gave their consent to these laws, but contented themselves with adhering to such of them merely, as chanced to turn out applicable to their situation while they quietly allowed the rest to pass into oblivion, where they remained until some over-wise governor attempted to put them in force, in order to serve his own purposes. Then, with a spirit which has ever marked the Carolinians, they resisted them at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
