Excerpt from Life and Work of St. Paul With the same object, I have avoided wearying the reader with those interminable discussions of often unim portant minutiae - those endless refutations of impossible hypotheses - those exhaustive catalogues of untenable explanations which encumber so many of our Biblical commentaries. Both as to readings, renderings, and ex planations I have given at least a definite conclusion, and indicated as briefly and comprehensively as possible the grounds on which it is formed. Excerpt from Scenes From the Life of St. Paul This book, it is hoped, will meet a want long felt by many of the teachers in our Sunday-schools, It is essentially a class-book for our elder scholars, -and 'aims at giving such an account of the great Apostle of the Gentiles as will enable our young people to form some notion of the struggle amidst which the Christian religion was planted in the world. The writer kept steadily in view the fact that he was preparing a class-book to be read, not in one or two sittings, but in short portions, spread over many weeks. This will account for some repetitions which might otherwise seem out of place. At the same time, feeling that such a book might prove acceptable to many of the younger members of our congregations, the writer has tried to throw in the repetitions he thought necessary in the way least calculated to make them tedious to the more continuous reader. Excerpt from The Life of St. Paul When asked to write a foreword to Dr. Stalker's Life of St. Paul, I thought of two things: first the impression which I had received from a sermon that I heard Dr. Stalker preach a good many years ago in his own pulpit in Glasgow, Scotland, and secondly, the honor conferred in this privilege of writing a foreword to one of Dr. Stalker's books. I felt sure before even glancing at the pages that I should be pleased and profited by their perusal. The first thing that I did was to glance over the pages for the headings Of chapters and the summaries of paragraphs. I found the arrangement admirable, and would advise those into whose hands this fine volume may come to follow this plan. The only sentence apart from the headings which I read in the aforesaid preview was the last one in Chapter X, and that because the closing words, the best Of friends, especially arrested my attention.
