What really grabs you about this book is the way it goes from leadership all the way to personal mastery without missing a beat. It's a great handbook for any person who wants to have a meaningful work life without blowing their health or their relationship along the way. Walker doesn't fake it either. He's grounded the book with the Laws of Nature so, there's no theory about how things should be or could be at work. He highlights the importance of the culture and how for businesses to grow having the right knowledge and tools is not enough if the culture does not evolve/adapt with it fast enough. His 'Aussie' attitude comes across really 'matter-of-fact' and that really is refreshing when most business teachers and consultants are still in starched collars and formal ties. It's obvious that this book comes from real life experience and the section for good self mastery looks like Walker is recounting his 30 years in business, trying to help the rest of us not fall into the same ruts and grooves that don't work. Like wise news for young shoulders. Running a business–any business–is a risky proposition. It often seems that we are being buffeted by random variables in the economy and the marketplace that are not only beyond our control, but impossible to foresee with any true certainty. But in the groundbreaking The Natural Laws of Business, businessman and entrepreneur Richard Koch, author of The 80/20 Principle, reveals a unique and remarkably accurate way in which managers and executives can use fundamental principles of science to anticipate and dramatically improve their chances of success. From Newtonian physics and Mendelian genetics to cutting-edge chaos theories, science explains how and why the world–including the business world works the way it does. Now, Richard Koch provides fascinating, completely accessible explanations of key scientific and economic theories, including their history and development. Through real-life examples and practical instructions he shows us how to successfully incorporate these natural laws into daily business decisions. For instance, drawing on four centuries of scientific progress, Koch explains how Darwin’s theory of natural selection can become the key to enhancing a company’s competitive advantage; how Einstein’s theory of relativity can hold the secrets to improving time management; how the insights of evolutionary psychology can help managers improve their relationship with their employees; and how a Plague Theory formula can help predict the impact of technology or product innovation on your business. First published in the United Kingdom, where it has garnered praise from noted academics, critics, and business leaders, The Natural Laws of Business is a groundbreaking, highly insightful examination–for science lovers and business leaders alike--of the essential tools and techniques for analyzing and dealing successfully with the ever-changing business environment of the twenty-first century.

A short and entertaining introduction to thermodynamics that uses real-world examples to explain accessibly an important but subtle scientific theory A romantic description of the second law of thermodynamics is that the universe becomes increasingly disordered. But what does that actually mean? Starting with an overview of the three laws of thermodynamics, MacArthur "genius grant" winner R. Stephen Berry explains in this short book the fundamentals of a fundamental science. Readers learn both the history of thermodynamics, which began with attempts to solve everyday engineering problems, and ongoing controversy and unsolved puzzles. The exposition, suitable for both students and armchair physicists, requires no previous knowledge of the subject and only the simplest mathematics, taught as needed. With this better understanding of one science, readers also gain an appreciation of the role of research in science, the provisional nature of scientific theory, and the ways scientific exploration can uncover fundamental truths. Thus, from a science of everyday experience, we learn about the nature of the universe.
