Excerpt from The Laws of Climatic Evolution It follows from what has been said above that the low temperature which undoubtedly prevailed during the Glacial Epoch has not yet received any satisfactory explanation. Each one that has been proposed is either inadequate or is attended by grave difficulties. It is therefore probable that some factor which is essential for the complete solution of the problem is as yet undis covered, or at any rate, the importance of one which is already known has not been duly recognized. (ice Work, Present and Past, p. It is generally admitted, therefore, that no satisfactory Solution is offered for the problem before us, and that the most distinguished scientists who have investigated the subject have no considerable number of followers, that equally distinguished co-workers accept in part only. Excerpt from Climatic Changes an Nature Their Nature This book illustrates the modern trend toward unity in all of these ways. First, it is a companion volume to Earth and Sun. That volume is a discussion of the causes of weather, but a consideration of the weather of the present almost inevitably leads to a study of the climate of the past. Hence the two books were written originally as one, and were only separated from considerations of convenience. Second, the unity of nature is so great that when a subject such as climatic changes is considered, it is almost impossible to avoid other subjects, such as the movements of the earth's crust. Hence this book not only discusses climatic changes, but considers the causes of earthquakes and attempts to show how climatic changes may be related to great geological revolutions in the form, location, and altitude of the lands. Thus the book has a direct bearing on all the main physical factors which have molded the evolution of organic life, includ ing man. Excerpt from The Evolution of Climate Geologist very early in the history of their science, in fact as soon as fossils began to be examined, found indisputable evidence of great variations in climate. The vegetation which resulted in the coal measures could have grown only in a sub-tropical climate, while over these are vast remains of ice-worn boulders and scratched rocks which obviously have been left by ice existing under polar conditions. Such records were not found only in one region, but cropped up in juxtaposition in many parts of the world. Remains of sub-tropical vegetation were found in Spitzbergen, and remains of an extensive ice-sheet moving at sea-level from the south were clearly recognized in central and northern India. At first it was simply noticed that the older fossils generally indicated a warmer climate, and it was considered that the early climate of a globe cooling from the molten state would be warm and moist, and so account for the observed conditions. It was recognized that the ice remains were relatively recent, and so far as a cause for the Ice Age was sought it was considered that astronomical changes would be sufficient. It was only when geologists began to find records of ice ages far anterior to the Carboniferous Age, and astronomers proved by incontrovertible observations and calculations that changes in the earth's orbit, or its inclination to that orbit, could not account for the ice ages, that the importance and inexplicability of the geological evidence for changes of climate came to be clearly recognized. Excerpt from The Evolution of Climates The object of this work is to offer an interpretation of the causes, conditions and controlling principles of the climates which the earth has manifestly undergone during Geologic Ages and the Modern Era. The most important of these relate to the present and near future, but the great questions involved cannot be fully considered and set forth unless the whole range of the phenomena of climates and of the energies and the changing conditions under which they have acted be taken up in their entirety and in their intricate relations.
