Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: June 23, 1921 I want my friends to know that the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints declare that God inspires men. We heard Elder Whitney read to us the twenty-ninth chapter of Alma. When I was the junior member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, I knew that chapter off by heart, and I used to repeat it, time and time again, in my public addresses. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 24, 1921 I said to you that I know that the Lord communicates with his servants. I have not doubted this as a fact since I was a boy and heard the testimony of my father, regarding the revelation that came to him of the divinity of the mission of the Prophet Joseph. I feel impressed to relate that circumstance and add his testi mony to the one that I am now giving. He accepted a call to a mission about 1880. When he began preaching, in his native land, and bore testimony of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he noticed that the people turned away from him. They were bitter in their hearts against anything 'mormon, and the name of Joseph Smith seemed to arouse antagonism in their hearts. One day he concluded that the best way to get these people would be to preach just the simple principles, the atone ment of the Lord Jesus Christ, the first principles of the gospel, and not bear testimony of the restoration of the gospel. It first came 'simply, as a passing thought, but yet it influenced his future work. In a month or so he became oppressed with a gloomy, downcast feeling and he could not enter into the spirit of his work. He did not really know what was the matter, but his mind became obstructed, his spirit became clogged, he was oppressed and hampered; and that feeling of depression continued until it weighed him down with such heaviness that he went to the Lord and said: 'unless I can get this feeling removed, I will have to go home. I can not continue my work with this feeling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: May 12, 1921 At the Tuesday morning session, April 5th, the dark, glowering skies made it necessary to turn on the lights in the tabernacle, while outside it was snowing heavily. Overcoats and winter wraps hung from the balcony railing and were in evidence every where. President Grant commented on the excellent attendance, considering the adverse climatic conditions. Elder Stephen L. Richards, the first speaker, quoted Shakes peare's Sweet are the uses of adversity. Financial conditions have been unnatural and upset and many have been obliged to retrench, said he wondered if this condition has not been brought about to vindicate the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The gospel is interpreted in terms of life and living, and while the Church as such does not hold its economic mission as paramount, it does regard temporal affairs elemental in Spiritual growth. To this extent, the mission of the Church is economic. Among all people their temporal affairs are part and portion of their growth and progress. The influence of the Church in economics has had a stabilizing effect on the affairs of the community. Elder Richards gave it as his conviction that the business activities of the community have been saved from catastrophe, by the fact that the president of the Church stands at the head of some of the largest financial institutions of the region over which its membership extends. For his part, said Elder Richards, he repented of any shadow of criticism that might have entered his heart concerning this policy of the Church. He believes that the policy has been vindicated. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 83: December 15, 1921 I am in receipt of your letters dated Thanksgiving Day, and appreciate very highly the loving sentiments expressed in them. It was very kind of mother and you to Spend part of the holiday writing to me. I was pleased to hear that you have taken up the Book of Mormon as a home study. I have read it through several times. The more I read it the better I like it. Like it? I love it, yes, with all my heart. I have thanked God many times for preserving it, for bringing it forth in the day in which we live, and for the privilege I have had of reading and pondering over its sacred pages. Do you know what the Prophet Joseph Smith said concerning the Book of Mormon? He said a man would get nearer to God by reading it than he would by reading any other book. The Prophet spoke the truth. No book has ever brought me as near to God as the Book of Mormon has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: September 8, 1921 The other theory - the one advocated by the Mormon Church is that a heavenly messenger appeared to Joseph Smith and told the youth about a set of gold plates that were hid in a hill a short distance from his home, on which was engraved a history of the ancient inhabitants of America; that four years later Joseph Smith was permitted to take the plates from their hiding place; that through the gift and power of God he tran slated them into English and presented to the world the Book of Mormon. Now, in order that the world might have this new witness for God and His Christ, the Church has spent tens of thousands of dollars in printing and distributing the Book of Mormon, and thousands of missionaries have carried it to many of the nations. I have read Joseph Smith's account of the origin of the Book of Mormon many times, and I am thoroughly con vinced that it is true. It is much easier for me to believe Joseph Smith's story than to believe the Spaulding theory. One of the strong reasons I have for believing the Book of Mormon to be the word of God is because I believe the Prophets, Christ and the Apostles. There are in the Bible numerous prophecies relating to the Book of Mormon. I will refer to a few of them. A short time before his death the Patriarch Jacob, in blessing his son Joseph, said. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: August 25, 1921 It is true, in the main, that we teach these doctrines concerning God, but we certainly deny that they are antagonistic to the Scriptures, or dishonoring to the Divine Being; for this reason that we accept the full and complete revelation of God, the Eternal One, through the person, the character, and attributes of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. He, for us, is the revelation of God to man and this View justifies all we teach about God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
