It utters solemn warning, however, against procrastination and wilful neglect here, holding that this life is strictly a probationary period given unto men for repentance and valiant service, and that to neglect is to lose the ability to repent. It repudiates what it regards as a strained and' irrelevant exposition of a certain isolated passage from the Preacher of old: If the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth. There it shall be (eccles. 11: This we do not believe was ever intended to mean that as a man is when he dies, so shall he be eternally; nor do we admit that the tenor of Holy Writ supports any such inference. Neglect, wilful procrastination, evil life here shall surely be a handicap to eternal progress; but however far behind his more faithful fellows a sinner may fall, he shall yet advance if he will but repent and try. Is it empty assumption to say that such doctrine as this, given to the world through the Book of Mormon in 1830, is more vital than the dogmas of never ending torment and eternal damnation? Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 79: March 1, 1917 MY mind reverts to the time when thousands of honest souls were driven from their homes, because they worshiped God according to the dictates of their own conscience. How well do I remember sitting by the fireside, listening to my father reading from the papers, of those true and staunch followers of the great Nazarene being driven out into the world. My parents' eyes filled with tears of sympathy for those dear ones that were undergoing such trials and hardships, many suffering death. I was not old enough to understand why they should shed tears; yet, it seemed to have a lasting effect upon me. My parents were staunch Baptists, so I was brought up in their faith. I remained a member of that church for many years, believing it to be, as it professed, the true church of Christ. Several years later, when my youngest son reached the age of twenty, he met with a very serious accident, rending his lungs, and he died two years later. Shortly after his death, I returned one day from visiting a friend and found a gospel tract, which had been left during my absence. In reading the tract, I found the words of our Savior to Nicodemus (john 3: Except a man be born of the water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Will they forget the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the covenants that they have made in the waters of baptism. And in sacred places? Or will they go out as men, in every sense - pure men, high - minded men, honest men virtuous men, men of God? That is what I am. Anxious about. I want to see the hand of God made manifest in the acts of the men that go out from the ranks of the Church of Jesus Christ and from the state of Utah, to help to defend the principles of liberty and sound government for the human family. I want to see them so live that they can be in communion with the Lord, in their camps, and in their secret places, and that in the midst of battle they can say: Father, my life and my spirit are in thy hand! I want to see the boys that go away from here in this cause.
