Mozambique is a country located in the southeastern part of Africa, and it is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to the west, and South Africa and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to the south. The country has a population of approximately 30 million, and its economy is largely dominated by agriculture, industrial production, and mining. Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975, and since then, the country has undergone a series of challenges, including armed conflicts, natural disasters, poverty, and lack of development. However, Mozambique has made significant progress over the past few years, and it is currently considered one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Mozambique's official language is Portuguese, which is spoken by a significant proportion of the population. However, there are also several local languages spoken throughout the country, including Swahili, Makhuwa, Sena, and Tswa. Mozambique is known for its rich culture, which is influenced by its history, religion, and traditions. The Portuguese Language Continuum in Africa and Brazil is the first publication in English to offer studies on a whole set of varieties of Portuguese in Africa as well as Brazilian Portuguese. Authored by specialists on varieties of Portuguese in Africa and Brazil, the eleven chapters and the epilogue promote a dialogue between researchers interested in their genesis, sociohistories and linguistic properties. Most chapters directly address the idea of a continuum of Portuguese derived from parallel sociohistorical and linguistic factors in Africa and Brazil, due to the colonial expansion of the language to new multilingual settings. The volume contributes to the understanding of structural properties that are often shared by several varieties in this continuum, and describes the various situations and domains of language use as well as sociocultural contexts where they have emerged and where they are being used.
