Excerpt from The Lady of the Bedchamber, Vol. 2 of 2: A Novel Of De Montfort, that thus enhanced and drew forth the attentions of the friend. She thought it might be so, but nevertheless, she took her self severely to task with respect to the nature of her own sentiments towards De Cressy, and soon discovered, that even were she free to choose, he was not the man who could ever have made a serious impression upon her heart, and perhaps it was this latent consciousness that had made her so long blind to the danger of so great an intimacy with him. Excerpt from The Lady of the Bedchamber, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel After many other victories, so easily achieved that this campaign seemed almost an excursion of pleasure, Louis returned triumphantly to Paris. His first care was now to make in quiries about the daughter of the Chevalier de Valcour, and finding that she was in the Con vent of St. Agnes, situated in one of the valleys at the foot of Pyrenees, he determined to place her immediately among the maids of honour attendant on the Queen, and despatched forthwith a gouvernante, and an armed tr00p to escort her to Paris. Sarah Robinson Scott was a writer, translator and social reformer. While Scott’s legacy presents her as a committed Anglican philanthropist, the letters she wrote reveal her to have been a witty, even savage, commentator on eighteenth-century life. This is the first edition of Scott’s letters to be published and presents all extant copies.

This volume contains Edgeworth's best courtship novel belinda, which replaces mercenary fortune-hunting with a deeper quest for marital compatibility, valorising irrationality and love over reason and duty. MARIA EDGEWORTH was born in 1768. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800) was also her first Irish tale. The next such tale was Ennui (1809), after which came The Absentee, which began life as an unstaged play and was then published (in prose) in Tales of Fashionable Life (1812), as were several of her other stories. They were followed in 1817 by the last of her Irish tales, Ormond. Maria Edgeworth died in 1849. Edited with an introduction and notes by Marilyn Butler.
