In this graphic novel debut, One Thousand Naira, the highest current denomination, travels from the mint where it is manufactured into the hands of people from all walks of life including traders, craftsmen, artisans and even, students. Money is present at the start of friendships, triumphs and failures, the birth of a child, celebrations and everyday trade and commerce. From the mundane to major milestones, the thousand Naira note witnesses the passage of time, observing the highs and lows in people’s lives. Through vibrant illustrations, strong narration, and humorous dialogue, the reader is transported to various places where money changes hands and gets a glimpse into how Nigerians spend money.

Money ushers in new beginnings, solves problems and even restores hope. From lovers to university students to traders, the thousand Naira note is a silent witness to the changes and daily triumphs that often go unnoticed and uncelebrated. Each chapter explores the role money plays in love and relationships, marriage, education, politics, trade, and commerce. This is a glimpse into the Nigerian experience through the eyes of the highest denomination: one thousand Naira.

This story is about an African American businessman who embarked on what he thought would be a promising business trip to Nigeria in 1978. Although that first business trip was unsuccessful, he would eventually make four more trips, with the hope that the next trip would bring him that elusive financial success. I am that African American businessman, and in the process of making these trips, I lived in the country for more than fourteen years. My experiences included living under military rule, a strained union, corruption, and other social problems. Despite these difficulties, I had the opportunity of sharing the warm and friendly relationships with members of the three major ethnic groups (Hausa, Ibo, and Yoruba) and some of the over 250 minorities. After witnessing Nigeria's problems for more than fourteen years, it left me with a strong urge to write about their situation in a constructive way. My journey touched on various levels of the Nigerian society, and I would like to share these experiences with you in "It's Time" for A Country Called Nigeria.

Chioma decided to travel to Nigeria to explore and discover Nigeria alone. She also felt it was an excellent opportunity to find out who her birth mother was.
