Excerpt from The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Vol. 8: October, 1922-September, 1923 A fairly wide variation in blood sugar values is Shown in the aecom panying tabulation. Excerpt from The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Vol. 1: October, 1915-September, 1916 But even better results have been obtained by the use of sensitized typhoid vaccines. These vaccines, which were originally suggested by Besredka in 1902, consist in either living or dead bacteria that have been treated, or sensitized, by means of an immune serum which is active against the organism in question, with subsequent removal of the excess of serum by washing. Such vaccines, particularly in the case of typhoid fever, have been shown, on the basis of the experimental work of numerous observers, to possess the following advantages over the ordinary, untreated vaccines. They give rise to transitory, passive im munity followed by active immunity that is as lasting as that secured by using untreated vaccines. They have the further advantage of producing distinctly less symptomatic disturbances than the ordinary vaccines. In their experiments on apes Metchnikoff and found distinctly better protection against typhoid fever, which can be produced in these animals, by vaccinating with liv ing, sensitized typhoid bacilli than by some of the other vaccines that have been devised, and used for the production of immunity in human beings. These sen sitized vaccines havesubsequently been extensively used for prophylactic im munization with success. In recent publications Gay and Claypole29 have shown that either living or dead sensitized typhoid vaccines, but particularly the sedi ment of the alcohol - killed sensitized vaccines, protect rabbits against becom ing typhoid carriers better than several other unsensitized preparations that were tried. For a further discussion of the use of these vaccines in prophy laxis, we refer the reader to this article. Likewise the cells of the substantia propria show a slightly greater degree of pyknosis and contraction than in control preparations. The bulbar and palpebral conjunc tivae show a similar pyknosis and contraction. In the fornix there is a more decided vacuolation of the conjunctival epithelium. The epithelium of the cutaneous surface of the eyelid shows also slight pyknosis and contraction. In the region of the inferior fornix alone does the subconjunctival connective tis sue show a well - marked edema. In the upper fornix the edema is less marked. The lacrimal gland shows a marked distention of its gland spaces which are filled with secretion. Harder's gland and the tarsal glands show no changes. Likewise the sinus hairs.
