The gold standard for industrial research now completely revised in line with current trends in the field, with all contributions extensively updated or rewritten. In 21 chapters readers can benefit from the key working knowledge of today's leading pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Roche. Drug developers from industry and academia present all the factors governing drug bioavailability, complete with practical examples and real-life data. Part I focuses on in vitro and in vivo measurements of physicochemical properties, such as membrane permeability and ionization. Part II discusses solubility and gastrointestinal absorption, while the third part is devoted to metabolism and excretory mechanisms. The much revised and expanded part IV surveys current in silico approaches to predict drug properties needed to estimate the bioavailability of any new drug candidate. The final part shows how poor bioavailability may be improved by various approaches during the development process. No other publication offers the same level of treatment on this crucial topic in modern drug development.

Biological cell membranes regulate the transfer of matter and information between the intracellular and extracellular compartments as basic survival and maintenance functions for an organism. This volume contains a series of reviews that are c- cerned with how epithelial plasma membranes regulate the transport of solutes between the intracellular and extracellular compartments of a cell. This book is also an attempt to analyze the molecular basis for the movement of various solutes across an epithelial cell membrane. This volume is devoted to a diversity of epithelial transport mechanisms in rep- sentative cell membranes of a variety of living things. The ?rst section of the book (Chapters 1–6) focuses on mechanisms of solute transport in epithelia of inver- brates. The last section which comprises ten chapters (Chapters 7–16) deals with solute transporters in epithelial cell membranes of vertebrates. It is hoped that with this particular ordering the reader can glean a telescopic view of the evolutionary history of the various epithelial solute transporters.

Factors Affecting Neurodevelopment: Genetics, Neurology, Behavior, and Diet is a comprehensive reference on the genetic and behavioral features associated with proper and abnormal development. The book discusses the mechanisms underlying neurological development and provides readers with a detailed introduction to the neural connections and complexities in biological circuitries, as well as the physiological, behavioral, molecular, and cellular features of neurodevelopment. In addition, the book examines in vitro and in vivo modeling of development with stem cells and model systems. Provides the most comprehensive coverage of a broad range of topics relating to the neuroscience of development Features sections on the genetics of developmental conditions and accompanying behavior Contains an abstract, key facts, mini dictionary of terms, and summary points to aid in understanding in each chapter Focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders and environmental factors that influence neural development Includes more than 500 illustrations and tables
