In this book, Japanese literature, which played a prominent role in the aggressive war against China, is analysed as “Invasion Literature”. The book conducts an in-depth study and discussion focusing on the origin and development of invasion literature, the writers, their works and the important role they played in the war against China, and the influence that such writings have had on Japanese post-war literature. It examines in particular detail under-discussed and lesser-known texts, thus compensating for lack of other scholarly writings researching the history and representation of the Japanese invasion of China in Japanese literature. This book was first published in Chinese by the “Quality Engineering” Project of Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences “Nine Five” Planning. Upon publication, it was well-received by the public and led to various television and newspaper interviews for the author. It was republished by Kunlun Press in 2005, and again met with a great reception. The preface of this book was published in People’s Daily and several chapters were reprinted in six issues of Journal of Literature and Art. The book won first prize of the Sixth Excellent Achievements of Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences, and the Book Award of the Sixth Chinese People’s Liberation Army. It was also selected to be part of the first national “Three One Hundred” original publication project.

Despite the growing number of publications on the Russo-Japanese War, an abundance of questions and issues related to this topic remain unsolved, or call for a reexamination. This 30-chapter volume, the first in the two-volume project Rethinking the Russo-Japanese War, provides a comprehensive reexamination of the origins of the conflict, the various dimensions of the nineteen-month conflagration, the legacy of the war, and its place in the history of the twentieth century. Such an enterprise is not only timely but unique. It has benefited from a multinational team of thirty-two scholars from twelve nations representing a broad disciplinary background. The majority of them focus on topics never researched before and without exception provide a novel and critical view of the war. This reexamination is, of course, facilitated by a century-long perspective as well as an impressive assortment of primary and secondary sources, many of them unexplored and, in a number of cases, unavailable earlier.

Like Volume one, Volume two of The Russo-Japanese War in Global Perspective examines the Russo-Japanese War in its military, diplomatic, social, political, and cultural context. In this volume East Asian contributors focus on the Asian side of the war to flesh out the assertion that the Russo-Japanese War was, in fact, World War Zero, the first global confl ict of the 20th century. The contributors demonstrate that the Russo-Japanese War, largely forgotten in the aftermath of World War I, actually was a precursor to the catastrophe that engulfed the world less than a decade after the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth. This study also helps us better understand Japan as it emerged at the beginning of its fateful 20th century.

In Russian Orthodoxy and the Russo-Japanese War, Betsy Perabo looks at the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 through the unique concept of an 'interreligious war' between Christian and Buddhist nations, focusing on the figure of Nikolai of Japan, the Russian leader of the Orthodox Church in Japan. Drawing extensively on Nikolai's writings alongside other Russian-language sources, the book provides a window into the diverse Orthodox Christian perspectives on the Russo-Japanese War – from the officials who saw the war as a crusade for Christian domination of Asia to Nikolai, who remained with his congregation in Tokyo during the war. Writings by Russian soldiers, field chaplains, military psychologists, and leaders in the missionary community contribute to a rich portrait of a Christian nation at war. By grounding its discussion of 'interreligious war' in the historical example of the Russo-Japanese War, and by looking at the war using the sympathetic and compelling figure of Nikolai of Japan, this book provides a unique perspective which will be of value to students and scholars of both Russian history, the history of war and religion and religious ethics.
