I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. Excerpt from Cuba the Pearl of the Antilles Undoubtedly the reader is familiar with the fact that there ewists a surprisingly large number of books on the subject of foreign trade which devote three fourths of their space to use less generalities and the giving of advice on the subject, of such a character as the business man, who uses sound judgment, does not need, and which, for anyone not gifted with common sense, is useless. Time and again the author has seen books on the subject, of 500 to 800 pages, which give no more of basic, fundamental, necessary information than could have been rendered in one third of the same space.
