Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Island of Cuba: Message From the President of the United States in Reference to the Island of Cuba Sir: The present condition of the island of Cuba has excited much attention, and has become of deep interest to this Union. From the public despatch and other papers which you will receive with this, you will perceive the great and continued injuries which our commerce is suffering from pirates issuing from thence, the repeated demands made upon the authorities of the island for their suppression, and the exertions, but partially effectual, of our own naval {orce against them. There is another point of view, however, in which the condition of the island is yet more an Object of concern. From various sources intima tions have been received here that the British government have it in contemplation to obtain possession Of the island. It is even asserted from sources to which some credit is due, that they have been for 111o1e than two years in secret negotiation with Spain for the cession Of the island; and it is added that Spain, though disinclined to such an ar rangement, might resist it with more firmness, if, for a limited period of time, she could obtain the joint guarantee Of the United States and France, securing the island to herself. Excerpt from The Island of Cuba: A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Great Antilla Indeed, so little have we been concerned with the island - which, on account of its proximity to our shores, if for no other rea son, should have some claim to our consider ation - that, according to the results of a search instituted in the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, but sni works-upon Cuba were published in this country between the years of 1870 and 1889, and only one during the years from 1890 to 1895; while a file of the annual English Catalogue of Books from 1885 to 1895 does not con tain the title of a single such work printed in Great Britain and Ireland. We might naturally expect that the atten tion again centered upon the Island of Cuba by the recurrence of hostilities in 1895 would be promptly followed by a new output of literature; and this has proved to be the case. Three works of some magnitude have already appeared in the United States this year, besides a flood of small pamphlets and articles.
