This book gathers contributions to the 3rd International Conference on Smart Learning Ecosystems and Regional Developments (SLERD 2018), held at Aalborg University, Denmark on 23–25 May 2018. What characterizes smart learning ecosystems? What is their role in city and regional development and innovation? How can we promote citizen engagement in smart learning ecosystems? These are some of the questions addressed at SLERD 2018 and documented in these proceedings, which include a diverse range of papers intended to help understand, conceive, and promote innovative human-centric design and development methods, education/training practices, informal social learning, and citizen-driven policies. The papers elaborate on the notion of smart learning ecosystems, assess the relation of smart learning ecosystems with their physical surroundings, and identify new resources for smart learning. SLERD 2018 contributes to foster the social innovation sectors, ICT and economic development and deployment strategies, as well as new policies for smarter, more proactive citizens. As such, these proceedings are relevant for researchers and policymakers alike.

Understanding Interaction explores the interaction between people and technology in the broader context of the relations between the human-made and the natural environments. It is not just about digital technologies – our computers, smartphones, the Internet – but all our technologies, such as mechanical, electrical, and electronic. Our ancestors started creating mechanical tools and shaping their environments millions of years ago, developing cultures and languages, which in turn influenced our evolution. Volume 1 looks into this deep history, starting from the tool-creating period (the longest and most influential on our physical and mental capacities) to the settlement period (agriculture, domestication, villages and cities, written language), the industrial period (science, engineering, reformation, and renaissance), and finally the communication period (mass media, digital technologies, and global networks). Volume 2 looks into humans in interaction – our physiology, anatomy, neurology, psychology, how we experience and influence the world, and how we (think we) think. From this transdisciplinary understanding, design approaches and frameworks are presented to potentially guide future developments and innovations. The aim of the book is to be a guide and inspiration for designers, artists, engineers, psychologists, media producers, social scientists, etc., and, as such, be useful for both novices and more experienced practitioners. Advances in the engineering of sensing and acting capabilities distributed in wide range of specialized devices is providing at last an opportunity for the fundamental advances that computer science achieved in the past few decades to make an impact in our daily lives. This technical confluence is matched by a unique historical context where users are better informed (more aware of the benefits that technology can provide) and production of more complex systems is becoming more affordable. Sensors/actuators deployed in an environment (in this context it can be any physical space like a house, office, classroom, car, street, etc.) facilitate a link between an automated decision-making system connected to that technologically enriched space. This computing empowered environment enables the provision of an intelligent environment, i.e., "a digital environment that proactively, but sensibly, supports people in their daily lives". This is an active area of research which is attracting an increasing number of professionals (in academia and industry) worldwide. The prestigious 5th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE'09) is focused on the development of advanced intelligent environments and stimulates the discussion on several specific topics which are crucial to the future of the area. As part of that five workshops were supported as part of IE'09. This volume is the combined proceedings of those five workshops: Workshop on Digital Object Memories (DOMe'09), Workshop on RFID Technology: concepts, practices & solutions (RFID'09), Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Ambient Intelligence (AITAmI'09), Workshop on Ethical Design of Ambient Intelligence (EDAmI'09), Workshop on Smart Offices and Other Workplaces (SOOW'09).
