Microcompartmentation refers to nonhomogeneous distribution of solutes in compartments of cells or associated structures without intervening membranal barriers. Such variations in concentration of ions, metabolites, intracellular messengers, and nutrients can introduce significant heterogeneity in subcellular function and regulation. The current focus on biological examples of microcompartmentation provides ample evidence for its importance and the role of physical structure in determining local chemical environments. The examples present in the different chapters include microcompartmentation of Ca2+,H+,ATP. ADP, O2, glycolytic intermediates, fatty acids, amino acids, and nucleic acid precursors. In reviewing these systems, the authors provide a useful resource for experimental approaches to study microcompartmentation and provide the basis for future studies of its role in regulation of cell functions.

The ability of condensation polymers to undergo additional chemical reactions, so-called transreactions, is really fascinating. These processes lead to novel copolymers with desired composition and sequential order, allow to enhance the compatibility and to minimize molecular weight fluctuations during polycondensation and processing and to provide for chemical healing of laminates of condensation polymers. An international team of highly reputated polymer chemists and physicists discusses here, first of all, various types of transreactions, but additional condensations are also detailed in many cases. - A comprehensive book of high interest to any polymer scientist in academia and industry!

“Criticism of capitalism“ – is it really politically fair and theoretically sound to address important politico-economic issues of our time by use of a terminology that still stems from the times of the Cold War? Money is the other topic. “Toward gold throng all, To gold cling all, Yes, all!” In times of money, which is intrinsically worthless and may therefore be provided in arbitrary amounts by a society, is it really adequate that we still (like Goethe did for gold) regard these petty paper slips as the scarcest resource of them all? In this book, Kaiser provides the reader with surprisingly new insights into the fascinating phenomena of capital and money.
