It consisted of the thirteen original states and the territory claimed by some of them. The area of the United States since then has been greatly increased by purchase, by conquest, and by cession. The first great accessions were through the acquisition of the Louisiana and Oregon tracts in 1803-5, covering square miles. The Accessions. Florida purchase of 1819 added square miles.
