The dynamism of religion all over the world presupposes that discourse on it generally is a continuous exercise. As religion influences the environment of its operation so also is the influence of the environment on the practice of religion. Nigeria, a multi-religious nation has experienced and is still experiencing the positive as well the negative aspects of religious practices in her socio-political, economic and cultural spheres. There is no doubt that religion is manipulated by some people, which portray it in bad light and makes it vulnerable to criticisms despite the unanimity about its potential to be a force for good in the society. Recent developments in Nigeria indicate that religion has a role in the survival or otherwise of the country. Such include the re-introduction of Sharicah penal code in some states in the northern part of the country, the emergence of Islamic banks, proliferation of private faith-based tertiary institutions, emergence of different factions and sects in religions and the challenge of insurgency using religion as camouflage in the name of the Boko Haram. This book addresses contemporary issues in the use of religion in Nigeria. Its uniqueness lies in the calibre of notable scholars who contributed to it from various ethno-religious and geographical backgrounds. It contains the views of eminent scholars from Islam and Christianity and is jointly edited by experienced professors in the two faiths. The overall aim is to enhance better understanding of religion and to promote peaceful co-existence between and among adherents of the two religions.

Human hostility is not the narrative of a selected few. Since the fall of the grandparents of the human family, Adam and Eve, all humans have continued to participate in the reality of evil. Accordingly, the question is no longer whether evil will strike, but rather, when evil strikes, how should humans, particularly Christians, respond to it? This book offers a relevant and effective theology and ethics for addressing the issue of Christian response to violence in Nigeria and beyond. It situates the whole gamut of the reign of human hostility in its various manifestations: self-interest and greed for power, deception and social injustices, governmental official corruption, terrorism and so on. It encourages humans to take seriously both the fact of God creating humans good and the fall serving as the gateway of evil into the human race. It recognizes the complexity of human problems. Yet it offers possibility for just peacemaking. In spite of the horrific violence across the globe, humans are still able to do tremendous good. Thus the book recognizes the paradox of humanity: humans are capable of doing tremendous good and equally capable of doing tremendous evil.

The erosion of moral values on a global scale has left nations vulnerable to greed, power, and violence as the shaping forces of culture. In the absence of an ethical foundation, corruption reverberates through public life, destabilizing countries and undermining human flourishing. Examining the many challenges facing Nigeria in the twenty-first century, Dr. Sunday Bobai Agang suggests that his homeland is experiencing just such a crisis – one rooted not in religion, economics, or politics but rather an eroding moral foundation. For a nation to thrive, he argues, its people must possess a moral and ethical vision characterized by sincerity and truth, love and unity. Far from representing impractical ideals, these are the virtues upon which a nation’s security and stability depend. Endangered Moral Values offers both a powerful warning of the dangers inherent in ignoring a society’s ethical and moral decay and a passionate invitation for citizens to work together towards a transformed future.

Africa needs leaders and Christians from every walk of life to rediscover their identity and purpose in all spheres of society. African Public Theology sounds a clarion call to accomplish this vital task. God created all humans equally, intending for us to live in community and take responsibility for the world around us – a mandate we need to act on. Through faithful application of Scripture to contexts common in the continent today, contributors from across Africa join as one to present a vision for the Africa that God intended. No simplistic solutions are offered – instead African Public Theology challenges every reader to think through the application of biblical principles in their own community, place of work and sphere of influence. If we heed the principles and lessons that God’s word has for society, culture and public life, then countries across Africa can have hope of a future that is free from corruption and self-promotion and is instead characterized by collective stewardship and servant-hearted leadership.
