Excerpt from The Hymn Jesus of Nazareth Passeth by Its History and Other Verses I What means this eager, anxious thr'ong Pressing our busy streets along? These wondrous gatherings day by day, What means this strange commotion, pray? Voices in accents hushed reply Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. II E'en children feel the potent spell And haste their new-found joy to tell. In crowds they to the place repair Where Christians daily bow in prayer, Hosannas mingle with the cry Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. III Who is this Jesus? Why should He The city move so mightily? A passing stranger, has He skill To move the multitude at will? Again the stirring tones reply Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. IV Jesus! 'tis He who once below Man's pathway trod mid pain and woe And burdened ones where'er He came Brought out their sick and deaf and lame. Blind men rejoiced to hear the cry Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. V Again He comes - from place to place His holy footprints we can trace; He pauses at our threshold, nay, He enters, condescends to stay! Shall we not gladly raise the cry Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. VI Bring out your sick and blind and lame, 'tis to restore them Jesus came; Compassion infinite you'll find With boundless power in Him combined. Come quickly while salvation's nigh, Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. VII Ye sin-sick souls, who feel your need, He comes to you, a Friend indeed Rise from your weary, wakeful couch, Haste to secure His healing touch; No longer sadly wait and sigh, Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth Passeth By: The Life of the Messiah, Compiled From the Authorized Version of the Four Gospels Thereafter, waiting at the tomb before the dawn with Mary called Magdalene - receiving His parting blessing with the first disciples, and with them seeing Him ascend to Heaven; where as the Son of man still, they behold Him, as did Stephen, at the right hand of God - the Redeemer of the human race from the curse of the Law, and the One altogether lovely who has secured eternal life for every mortal who wills to accept the unspeakable gift from His ever extended hand. Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth A long time ago there was a carpenter who lived in a little town called Nazareth. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. Excerpt from Songs of the Day and Night: Or Three Centuries of Original Hymns for Public and Private Praise and Reading; The Life-Story of Jesus Christ; A Cantata With Other Sacred Poems Subsidiary to these observations, it will be noted that I sometimes place as heading and sometimes take for refrain golden words or apt saying or deep utterance Of the spiritual life of others. I may be pardoned in affirming that these are probably he most original of my Hymns. Forjust as the greatest and most enduring Sermons owe their immortality to their unfolding of the mind of God in the portion of His \vord chosen for text, so these inspiring words meeting the actual experience of the Hymn-writer quickens him to his best.
