Excerpt from The History of Wilbraham, Massachusetts The fact that the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of Wilbraham was approaching, was brought to the attention of the town at the annual meeting held in 1911, by the following article in the warrant: Art. 17. "To see if the town will take any action in regard to the celebration of its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary in 1913." Under this article the following votes were passed. "Voted that a committee of five be chosen to make all arrangements for the celebration, with power to act, and that they report at the next annual meeting the result of the progress made." At a meeting of Historical Committee, held soon afterwards, Chauncey E. Peck was chosen historian, and Miss Evanore O. Beebe secretary. At the annual town meeting in 1912, a report of the progress made was given by the chairman, and the town voted to instruct the committee to publish an illustrated history of the town. Many meetings were held by the Historical Committee, and many sub-committees were appointed to arrange different details of the program fro the celebration. All of which were carried out in a manner creditable to those who had arranged them, as will appear from reading the newspaper accounts of the celebration. The actual day of the signing of the Act of Incorporation was on June 15th, but as that day came on Sunday in 1913, it was decided to begin the three days' celebration on Tuesday, June 17th. Excerpt from History of the Wesleyan Academy: At Wilbraham, Mass;; 1817-1890 To persons of intelligence and breadth of view, the record of a literary institution is not less interesting than that of a city or State. Such an institution is something more than a corporation for the accumulation of wealth. It deals with mind, in its formative period. It is a gymnasium for the harmonious unfolding of the intellectual faculties, and the more perfect discipline of thought. The training thus secured becomes an admirable furnishing for the duties of practical life. Education is wealth invested "where moth and rust do not corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal." Among institutions of this kind, the Wesleyan Academy at Wilbraham holds a conspicuous and honored place. The amount of work performed is very large, and the quality is of a high order. The design has been to furnish the whole man. With careful regard to intellectual drill, constant attention has been given to the moral and spiritual needs of the young. Many students have there received the inspiration and spiritual uplift, so important in working out the practical problems of life. It has been deemed important to turn out good men and women as well as good students; and, so fully has this purpose been realized, that few institutions have furnished pupils better fitted to grapple with the affairs of the world. Excerpt from The History of Haverhill, Massachusetts That Spirit of liberty, - that/ earnest longing for independence which animates the breast of man, is not. To be spoken of - it is not to be written, analyzed nor criticised; but to be mused upon - to be felt - and to be acted in the field, or in the hall of legislation. It may be crushed, but never destroyed; it may nearly wither beneath the hot breath of monarchy, but it will never die. We might as well think of handling the lightning, or of changing the course of the thunder-bolt, as to destroy it. T is unfathomable - indescribable unknown, but to him who feels it. The roar of conflicting armies, the crackling of a conflagration the clanking of chains, the horrors of a dungeon nothing will appal the heart which it animates. In the long and arduous struggle of the Colonies for independence, Haverhill bore its share of the losses, both in men and treasure; perhaps none, of the same wealth and population, cud inor Blost of the inhabi tants were ready, at any period, to sacrifice their for tunes, and even their lives, to support the government of their choice. Their taxes were frequently enormous, but they were cheerfully borne. Though darkness and gloom often hung like a pal] over the struggling nation, still they were not dispirited, but clung to hope, like men who had determined to die, rather than see their beloved country groaning in slavery. Excerpt from Massachusetts in the American Revolution While the outbreak and progress of the revolution incontestably led to a great ex pansion of the human mind, that movement was felt rather in the field and the council, than in the closet or the schools. The war against England, which requiredfor its successful prosecution great powers and distinguished talents, happily appeared to create and to foster both. Whenever the occasion arose, there were always found men worthy of the occasion. Those who had manifested no special commanding faculties in the piping times of peace, were found, under the rousing stimulus of war. Excerpt from An Historical Address, Delivered at the Centennial Celebration of the Incorporation of the Town of Wilbraham, June 15, 1863 The favor with which the Address was received when delivered encourages me to hope that it may not be entirely destitute of interest when read. The haste with which it was prepared will render it necessary for me to thoroughly revise the manuscript, and thus cause some delay in sending it to the press. Accept, gentlemen, my thanks for the favors you have shown, and my best wishes for the prosperity not only of yourselves but of your fellow-citizens.
