Some popular myths I may have discarded. And I may not have echoed exaggerations which savour more of flattery to the living than of honour to the dead, yet I have sought to do justice to all, to appreciate excellence wherever found, and to exalt the men, of whatever rank, who have been public benefactors. That I have kept entirely free from error is more than I expect; I claim only such results as can be achieved by diligence and an earnest search after truth.
