Excerpt from History of the North Carolina, Vol. 2: From the Earliest Discoveries to the Present Time In the year of our Lord 1825, some notable events occurred in the history of the State. The village of Murfreesboro had greatly extended its limits and many worthy men had been added to the catalogue of its citizens. On February 25th, the village was thrown into a fever of excitement over the fact that Gilbert Mo tier, Marquis de La Fayette, was in Suffolk on his way to visit the town. He was no ordinary guest. A half century before, he had left his young wife and the splendors of court life in Paris, and had shed his blood in behalf of the struggling colonies. He had been a great and blameless actor since that time, in the French Revolution. He had landed in New York, August 15th of the previous year. He had uncovered his gray hairs at. The tomb of his dead friend at Mount Vernon. He had been with the retired sage at Monticello, and, as guest of the nation, was visiting each of the States. Excerpt from The History of North Carolina, From the Earliest Period, Vol. 1 If it be true, that history is the best mean oftea'ching and exercising the minds of those who destine themselves to public life, this advantage will, more certainly and eminently be found in the annals of the country, which is to be the theatre of one's actions: especially, if these annals present the rare and interest ing spectacle of a handful of adventurers. Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 2: The Federal Period, 1783 1860 In the present volume the effort has been to emphasize movements rather than events, ideals rather than men, or derly development rather than phenomena of antiquarian in terest. Such an undertaking has required a constant refer ence to contemporary records and the exposition of many movements which have been hitherto neglected or slightly treated. Consequently the volume may leave the impression of a series of monographic studies rather than a conventional narrative history. That perhaps is necessarily the character of the treatment of any subject in which social and economic forces are emphasized. The year 1836 is the first dividing line in the history of the stat-e after the Revolution. Prior to that date political con ceptions and ideals of social and economic duty bore the stamp of British heritage; thereafter the spirit of American democ racy made rapid progress. The constitutional convention of 1835, the rise of the whig and democratic parties, the estab lishment of a public school system, the foundation of asylum-s, the building of railways through state aid, and reform of the law - these matters, treated in considerable detail, are evi dence of a new order. It has also been my effort to outline the regime they displaced; to the antiquarian it has the greater interest, whereas to him who prefers life in action the epoch after 1836 will always make a stronger appeal. Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 2: With Maps and Illustrations; Embracing the Period of the Proprietary Government, From 1663 to 1729 In addition to these letters, the author's library furnished him with a mass of manuscripts (none of which have ever been printed), which he obtained in London some years since, in the shape of copies made from the originals there, and verified by his own comparison. A complete manuscript copy of the whole body of our statute law in 1715, was kindly furnished to the writer by his friend, William B. Rodman, Esq, of Washington, and has been of great service in the preparation of the book. The Hon. George Bancroft also very kindly placed in the writer's possession the original manuscript materials of George Chalmers, used by him in the preparation of his Annals, and of his Revolt of the American Colonies. These Mr. Bancroft purchased in London; and, with the advantage thus obtained of comparison of the manuscripts with Chalmers' printed volumes, the writer was enabled to ascertain some facts, the history of which was before obscure. To Mr. Bancroft, the author would further make his grateful acknowledgments for the great liberality with which he has allowed him access to his most extensive and rich collection of manuscripts relating to America: a col lection far more Valuable than any other in our country.
