The Hillsborough River is the largest river on Prince Edward Island and illustrates several key heritage and natural values associated with the creation and development of Canada. This document presents a management plan produced to meet the requirement of future planning for the river's heritage and recreational resources. The plan is also intended as evidence for public support for designation of the Hillsborough as a Canadian Heritage River. The plan is meant to provide a framework for activity throughout the 350 square kilometre area of the Hillsborough watershed. It begins with a vision, goals, and proposed implementation process for the plan. It then reviews the watershed area's natural and human heritage, natural resources (farming, fishing, forestry), shipbuilding history, and the transportation and recreation aspects of the watershed area. For each resource identified, management goals and objectives are stated along with the associated challenges and opportunities.
