Excerpt from The Hills Family in America: The Ancestry and Descendants of William Hills, the English Emigrant to New England in 1632 This work owes its existence to the fact that the gradually failing eye sight of the compiler resulted in total blindness before 1894. Compelled to relinquish his business and unable to end an active life in idleness, he commenced it and for more than ten years gave his time and money to this compilation of the genealogy of his name. The work he undertook would have been more than usually difficult for a skilled genealogist. The name Hill is among the most common of Eng lish surnames. Relatively the name Hills is so uncommon, that those born to it in our own time are perhaps more often Spoken of or addressed by other than their relatives and intimate friends, as if their name ended with double 1, instead of the distinctive S that forms a part of it. The distinction between these names in the olden times and to a com paratively recent date, was but little observed by the scribes who drew the wills, deeds and other documents destined to go upon public record. Cases have been noted where in the same instrument the name in one part was written Hill, in another Hills. An instance of this want of exactness can be found in appendix C at the end of this work. The signatures to such documents as required them, determined the surname, except where the Signer, following the scribe, or by legal authority, or as a matter of choice dropped the final s Much labor has been given to the resto ration to their family line, of those who were descendants of the emigrants whose names are borne upon the title page. The proof that satisfied both the compiler and the editor in the three most important cases, where those now living and known as Hill have been determined to be descendants of either the emigrants of 1632 or 1638 can be found in appendixes C, D, and E. Blessed with a tenacious memory, the compiler was able to so arrange the results of his investigations that not in a single instance did the editor find confusion in his lines.
