Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 4: September 15, 1899 Toil on with pure, unselfish aim, In patience till thy task is done; Care not for either praise or blame, Enough the victory won. All noble deeds, designed to bless, Are valued not by sordid price; Things born of struggle, storm and stress, Bring fullest sacrifice. All truth is meant to meet some need, And light the upward path of man, Who but for that were weak indeed, With all his power to plan. Fear not; thy sacrifice shall be A greater and a nobler gain; The cloud that hides the sun from thee Will bring thee needful rain. Shafts. Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 4: November 15, 1899 How shall we get it? First of all, we must begin to think - about the sorrows and sufferings of our fellow creatures, about the needs of the world, about the evils which exist around us, about the best way in which we can lessen misery and promote happiness. Thus shall we develop sympathy. Then we must begin to work - to work individually - not merely to send in our names or our shillings to some organiza tion which is battling for the right, whilst we and others are contented to look on and patronize this excellent institution or that devoted worker. As we work, we must pray - pray for this spirit to be developed and manifested in us, lazy and indolent, and self-indulgent though we may at present be. As We pray we must seek enlightenment, and thus endeavour to bring about the answer to our prayers by studying social problems, by reading about the havoc and pain which is being wrought through the prevalence of ignorance, selfishness, and injustice. If we earnestly desire to become like our Master, who went about doing good, depend upon it we may - for God wants us to be filled with this spirit, and if we want it too, the change will be wrought in us, and we shall become workers instead of drones in this great earthly hive, and play a nobler part upon the stage of life. Our ministry must be determined by our development and capacity. Some must spread comfort and sunshine in their homes, and minister to those immediately around them, others must face the Divine call to right the wrong, in the larger world outside - to enter upon a life-long struggle as Reformers, and thus voluntarily taking up a cross which involves daily self-denial, must serve the 'many' instead of the 'few.' In some measure all may follow in the footsteps of the Christ, who by His life and teaching so reformed the ideas and ways of men that His influence has become the greatest factor in history and is destined ultimately to trans form the human race into the Divine likeness - to change the unconscious sons of men into conscious sons of God. Excerpt from The Herald of the Golden Age, Vol. 4: October 15, 1899 I have been frequently told that when my children leave my immediate care they will become meat-eaters. This I do not believe, because in every such case that I have investi gated I have found that fish, flesh and fowl have been frequent items of the menus of some members of the household in which they have been reared. The sense of smell has at least been forcibly made tolerant of the odours of both raw and cooking flesh. A thorough knowledge of cookery and an intelligent selection of foods, carried out with an eye to nutritiousness, variety and individual tastes, are, of course, essentials to the successful introduction of Vegetarianism into the home. There should be as little deviation from the original dietary as possible, save an increase in variety. Meals should be meals in kitchen and dining room, not odd scratches and picnicky put-offs. Every customary dish of flesh-meat should be substituted with a savoury equivalent, and every innocent dish retained, but improved upon when possible. If for breakfast the changes have been rung upon eggs and bacon, cold ham, hot toast. Porridge, boiled milk and coffee and cocoa, then the porridge, toast, coffee, cocoa and poached eggs must be retained, while pancakes, savoury golden-brown fritters of yesterday's preparation, fried eggs and tomatoes on toast, fried mushrooms and such like dainties must substitute the bacon and ham. And see that the servants in the kitchen are equally well catered for. But if the porridge is thoroughly cooked and tempting in flavour and appearance, the bread of good wholemeal, and there be on the table fresh ripe fruits in summer, and tenderly stewed dried fruits and baked apples in the winter, it will be found that the savouries will be gradually discarded.
