This research has been conducted in Vicksburg Mississippi within the Vicksburg National Military Park and surrounding areas, to produce four 7.5 minute geologic maps of the area. The park service prioritized the delineation of geologic resources within the Military Park, which was achieved throughout geologic mapping. This project provides new geologic mapping to the Park by updating and integrating existing floodplain maps with new bedrock and surficial mapping within the four 7.5 min quadrangles. The objectives were to meet the mandates of the National Park Service and provide new geologic mapping to Vicksburg National Military Park as well as verify existing maps of the floodplain, within the time line of August 2014-May 2016. The resulting maps contribute to improve the understating of the geology within the Military Park, as well as provide insight to historical understanding, and engineering purposes such mining and mitigation of slope failure.

Vicksburg National Military Park was established by Congress to "commemorate the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg," which many consider the most decisive campaign of the Civil War. The battlefield at Vicksburg is one of the largest and most heavily visited of the nation's historic sites. Beginning with the efforts of Union and Confederate veterans to gain Congressional action to establish the park, and continuing through veterans' work in land acquisition, road and bridge construction, and the dedication of the magnificent memorials and monuments that dot the landscape, Images of America: Vicksburg National Military Park features stunning photographs of the efforts and events that have made Vicksburg the "art park of the world." Also included are images of veterans' reunions and the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, as well as a history of Vicksburg National Cemetery, where the remains of 17,000 Union soldiers and sailors are enshrined.

The Vicksburg National Military Park as it exists today is about two-thirds the size of the original park. The book describes the park as it was when the park was created. The book contains the name and location of markers and monuments that are currently located in the park. The book contains a brief history of the park, early photographs, descriptions, and styles of state markers and monuments. There are early maps of the park showing all the trenches and approaches. This book will give the park visitor far more insight as to the locations of all the markers that were associated with the park.
