Excerpt from The Fruit Situation, Vol. 73: October 1944 Prices received by farmers in 19hh for fruit, both citrus and deciduou generally were at levels approximately twice the averages for the 5 - year (1935 - 39) period. Prices for the 19hb-mm citrus crop, the marketing of which is nearly completed, averaged slightly above prices for the preceding crop. In contrast, prices for most deciduous fruits of the 19uu crop are averaging slightly below those for the short 19h} crop. Although the 19mh apple crop is about one - third larger than the 19k} crop, prices received by farmers for apples on October 15, 19h, were nearly as high as a year earlier. Continued high consumer incomes and large noncivilian requirements are the principal factors contributing to the relatively high prices received by farmers for fruit this year. The Fruits of Empire is a history of American expansion through the lens of art and food. In the decades after the Civil War, Americans consumed an unprecedented amount of fruit as it grew more accessible with advancements in refrigeration and transportation technologies. This excitement for fruit manifested in an explosion of fruit imagery within still life paintings, prints, trade cards, and more. Images of fruit labor and consumption by immigrants and people of color also gained visibility, merging alongside the efforts of expansionists to assimilate land and, in some cases, people into the national body. Divided into five chapters on visual images of the grape, orange, watermelon, banana, and pineapple, this book demonstrates how representations of fruit struck the nerve of the nation’s most heated debates over land, race, and citizenship in the age of high imperialism.
