Is historical knowledge important for education? How can we build a shared historical knowledge with schools, communities, and education professionals? The book responds to these questions by suggesting the public history approach, as applied in education and, more generally, to all professions that are based on human relations. The public history of education refers directly to North American experiences, but at the same time it is part of a process of European cultural acceptance and re-elaboration that has one of its main points of reference in the Italian Public History Association. The objective is not to make history for the general public, but to make public history with all those interested, in a collaborative and participative context, in the quest for meaningful knowledge, directly related to the current and challenging needs of our society.

Kindergarten Narratives on Froebelian Education showcases the latest scholarship and historical understandings concerning the casting of the kindergarten idea abroad: across cultures, continents and centuries. Each chapter reveals previously unknown narratives of intrepid endeavour, political pragmatism and pedagogical innovation that collectively provide insight into the transformation of Froebel's ideas on early education into a global phenomenon. Across global contexts, each chapter presents a case study of the ideas scattering abroad, illustrative of the movement of ideas, curricula and pedagogical change; in effect taking the kindergarten beyond the geographies and pedagogies of its German beginnings and borders. Chapters draw on historical examples of Froebelian education from The Netherlands, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, the UK and the USA. In the journal History of Education in 2006, Froebelian history scholar Professor Kevin J. Brehony (1948-2013) lamented the 'relative neglect' of the history of early years education at the same time there was a heightened global social and political interest in educating the young child. In this book, an international team of contributors respond to Brehony's suggestion that historical perspectives can play a role in current debates and suggest ways historical narratives might inform policies and practices in twenty-first century early childhood education, care settings and contexts. "Blackboards and Bootstraps: Revisioning education and schooling contributes to an international conversation about public education that, in recent decades, has been attenuated if not silenced by advocates of neoliberalism, marketisation and neocorporatism. Written for a wide audience, this book is not a manifesto for the twenty-first century. It is more of an invitation than a blueprint. In drawing a distinction between education and schooling, it identifies, recovers and explores many ideas about education and schooling that are no less important to the practice of the present than they were to the pedagogues of the past. The introduction questions the role of schooling in the future trajectory of spaceship earth. The remainder of the book considers these questions by revisiting a range of ideas that underpin current practice. It launches itself by returning to the sixteenth century, a time when the organisation and conduct of modern schooling took shape around a new set of terms – syllabus, class, curriculum and didactics – that, in their Latin forms not only became prominent in the international educational lexicon but also survived into the twentieth century. By the First World War, there was an international awareness that schooling is not the same as education. Schooling originally for the land-owning, mercantile and commercial elites of the sixteenth century had only partially engaged with the visions of democratic schooling voiced in the eighteenth century Enlightenment and the subsequent extension of suffrage and national and sexual liberation movements. Impressed by the universalistic achievements of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, the authors raise the prospect of a new educational humanism in the globalised world of the twenty-first century.
