This book reviews the phenomenology displayed by relativistic jets as well as the most recent theoretical efforts to understand the physical mechanisms at their origin. Relativistic jets have been observed and studied in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) for about half a century and are believed to be fueled by accretion onto a supermassive black hole at the center of the host galaxy. Since the first discovery of relativistic jets associated with so-called "micro-quasars" much more recently, it has seemed clear that much of the physics governing the relativistic outflows in stellar X-ray binaries harboring black holes and in AGN must be common, but acting on very different spatial and temporal scales. With new observational and theoretical results piling up every day, this book attempts to synthesize a consistent, unified physical picture of the formation and disruption of jets in accreting black-hole systems. In published papers H A Bethe and G E Brown worked out the collapse of large stars and supernova explosions. They went on to evolve binaries of compact stars, finding that in the standard scenario the first formed neutron star always went into a black hole in common envelope evolution. C-H Lee joined them in the study of black hole binaries and gamma ray bursts. They found the black holes to be the fossils of the gamma ray bursts. From their properties they could reconstruct features of the burst and of the accompanying hypernova explosions. This invaluable book contains 23 papers on astrophysics, chiefly on compact objects, written over 23 years. The papers are accompanied by illuminating commentary. In addition there is an appendix on kaon condensation which the editors believe to be relevant to the equation of state in neutron stars, and to explain why black holes are formed at relatively low masses.

What happens when you push a theory beyond its limits? You get a theory like general relativity. Although coined by Einstein, he would be hard pressed to recognize it. Einstein constructed a theory that would pertain to geodesic motion, or motion at constant velocity. Einstein field equations are equivalent to geometrical optics whose characteristic surfaces are those of electromagnetic, and not gravitational, radiation. In fact, gravitational energy is not included in the Einstein energy-stress tensor. As such it excludes catastrophic phenomena like the merger of black holes or neutron stars. In fact, black holes are what you get when you extend a non-Euclidean metric, like the Schwarzschild metric, beyond its domain of validity. Although there exists no solution to Einstein's field equations for two interacting mass-points, its numerical counterpart vants at being able to describe binary black hole collisions. Such singularities were pernicious to Einstein's conception of the universe, and he built bridges to avoid them. Nonlinear equations like Einstein's cannot be approximated by their linearization over large portions of spacetime thus placing in doubt the propagation of gravitational waves. Any wave phenomenon traveling at a finite velocity must show signs of aberration. No signs of such have ever been observed. The field equations do not possess a mechanism for the emission of gravitational waves, least of all for their attenuation.
