Describes the worldwide food industry's new phase (which developed in the 1980s and is called post-fordist) and its current effects on Brazil. In this phase, new sources of capital arose, new fields of investment appeared and Brazilian companies merged with foreign companies. This paper describes the origins of the food industry in Brazil; discusses the performance of agro-industry, chiefly food production, in the context of Brazilian heavy industrialization in the post-war era; presents the latest movements in the Brazilian food system; stresses the main aspects of the restructuring of the food industry in the developed countries; and assesses conditions in Brazil in relation to the new configuration of the worldwide food industry.

This book explores the agrifood system transitions in Brazil to provide a new understanding of the trajectory of agriculture and rural development in this country. It accentuates the increasing diversifi cation and hybridization of food production and consumption practices throughout history. With a framework that combines convention theory, neoinstitutional approaches and practice theory, this book suggests the concept of “food orders” which represents different arrangements of practices, institutions and sociotechnical artifacts. By exploring the interrelations between these elements, the book looks at six different food orders: industrial, commercial, domestic, aesthetic, civic and fi nancial, in tandem with examples of practices, sectors and territories to understand the dynamics of each one. This aids in understanding the main tendencies of the agrifood sector in such a vast country that, being a major player in global food markets, also affect production and consumption dynamics in several other countries. Besides, this book also seeks to comprehend the current institutional changes in Brazil that may be critical to interpret the global dissemination of populist and autocratic governments. There has been growing academic interest in local food plants. This is a subject that lies at the frontiers of knowledge of various areas, such as environmental sciences, nutrition, public health, and humanities. To date, however, we do not have a book bringing these multi-disciplinary perspectives to bear on this complex field. This book presents the current state of knowledge on local Brazilian food plants through a multidisciplinary approach, including an overview of food plants in Brazil, as well as comprehensive nutritional data. It compiles basic theories on the interrelationship between biodiversity and food and nutrition security, as well as ethnobotanical knowledge of local Brazilian food plants. Additionally, this title provides various methods of learning and teaching the subject, including through social media, artificial intelligence, and through workshops, among others.

State Capitalism under Neoliberalism analyzes State capitalism in agri-food under neoliberalism and investigates State-sponsored actions designed to counter the negative consequences of the implementation of free-market policies and strategies. In particular, it probes efforts of the Brazilian State to respond to the neoliberalization and corporatization of agriculture and food. Between 2003 and 2016, the left leaning Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) governed Brazil, which claimed to support landless peasants, family farming, food sovereignty, and State regulation of the unwanted consequences of the evolution of free market capitalism. The contributors analyze these actions of the Brazilian State, stressing its accomplishments and limits, and argue that the emancipatory actions of the Brazilian State engendered a complex and contradictory set of results which show that State capitalism is a problematic solution to the problems generated by the global neoliberal regime.
