Excerpt from The First "New Province" Of the Dominion Throughout the developments hitherto the attitude of the Hudson's Bay Company seems to have been regarded as a secon dary consideration: a fact which is not altogether to be explained by the vehemence of Canadian claims or the apathy of the British government. The old Company had been bought in 1863 by the International Financial Company, with Sir Edmund Head him self as the new Governor. It was argued, not without a measure of justice, that the purchase of Hudson's Bay stock with full knowledge of the conditions weakened very materially any claim which the old Company might have advanced for special con sideration. Excerpt from The History of the Dominion of Canada The subject of Canadian history has been usually treated in the textbooks authorized in elementary and secondary schools from a Provincial rather than a Dominion standpoint. Such works at best do not meet our present need, as they necessarily fail to give adequate recognition to all sections of the country, and as they often contain exaggerated notions of provincial matters. It was thought by many teachers that this mode of treatment should be changed and a wider view presented of the history and consolidation of the Dominion. In 1889 the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers discussed the feasibility of preparing a history of Canada with this object in view, and in the following year the Teachers' Associations of Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, also considered the same subject. In July, 1891, representatives of the different provinces met at the Education Department in Toronto, for a further consideration of the question. Nevertheless, it was not until July, 1892, at the meeting of the Dominion Educational Association in Montreal, that a scheme was formulated for the preparation of a text-book by competition, and a committee was appointed to examine such manuscripts as might be offered. Excerpt from A Son of the Old Dominion One soft yet brilliant day of spring found Captain Geoffry Flower - as handsome a young sprig of His Majesty King George III.'s Royal Dragoons as one would be likely to see in a month o' Sundays - riding along the shady road of a wooded ridge on the west bank of the Potomac in Virginia. Cap-a-pie, the horseman was equipped with nice regard for the requirements of military undress in an officer of wealth and station; his rosy Saxon cheeks, his bright blue eyes, his athletic figure, his look of vigorous health; the mounted servant, the pack-horses carrying portmanteaux and sundry rich accoutrements - all these should have ensured their owner against a clouded brow. But to Flower the times were evidently out of joint; his open face wore something nearly akin to a blush, combined with something very like a frown. Here was his grievance.
