The use of mental imagery and mental models can make a substantial difference to language and thinking, which improve by using them. This happens because knowledge can only be stored in homeomorphic, spatial structures. Words are addresses that the brain uses to locate the simulacra it has stored. Accordingly, the traditional view of knowledge is untenable: knowledge is not stored in language-like propositions. The philosophical and mathematical arguments claiming propositions exist, are erroneous. Language is learned naturally when words, sentences and the structure of the situation are experienced simultaneously. Grammars are geometrical systems that cannot be expressed in words. Their diverse geometries result in different experiential and behavioural consequences for different languages.

These images are embodied and lived experiences that take place in ‘the flesh of the world’, becoming part of us, at the same time that we unconsciously project aspects of ourselves on to a conceived space, object or event. Artistic images have a life and reality of their own and they develop through unexpected associations rather than rational and causal logic. Images are usually thought of as retinal pictures but profound poetic images are multi-sensory and they address us in an embodied and emotive manner. This book is an attempt to re-evaluate some basic assumptions about language, communication, and cognition in the light of the new epistemology of autopoiesis as the theory of the living. Starting with a critique of common myths about language and communication, the author goes on to argue for a new understanding of language and cognition as functional adaptive activities in a consensual domain of interactions.
