The structure of the novel moves between Emilia's own reminiscences and details of Emilia's life, birth and upbringing told through the voice of the family confessor. Emilia is from Chioggia, one of lagoon islands of Venice. She is betrothed to and marries Ensign Iago, the famous villain of Shakespeare's play, Othello. The story moves between the Doge's prison in Venice and the events leading up to Emilia's arrest for treason against the Venetian state. The descriptions of Chioggia, Venice and Cyprus are true to the layout of those sites from the 1600's and for the most part, today. Only slight changes are made to Shakespeare's storyline to develop the character of Emilia, the outspoken woman who ultimately exposes Iago's intrigue. The novel is set in the 1600's in Venice. A possible treason has taken place in Cyprus. The woman wounded in Cyprus, Emilia, is taken under guard to the prison in the Doge's palace in Venice accused of treachery against the Republic. Emilia is the sole survivor of the murders and suicide that have shaken the Republic and she is implicated for her role in the plot. It is clear that politics will engineer the outcome of Emilia's trial.

Shakespeare and the Italian Renaissance investigates the works of Shakespeare and his fellow dramatists from within the context of the European Renaissance and, more specifically, from within the context of Italian cultural, dramatic, and literary traditions, with reference to the impact and influence of classical, coeval, and contemporary culture. Samuel Morse was born in 1585, probably in or near Dedham, England. He immigrated in 1635 and settled at Dedham, Massachusetts, later moving to Medfield, Massachusetts. He died in 1654.

In 1966, the destroyer USS Manfred is bound for Vietnam. For junior ensign Jon Zachery, life is simple. He wants the American dream for his wife and for himself, and the navy is just the first step along the way. After the ship enters the combat zone, however, Zachery lands in hot water with his superior officers. At the same time, he begins to have troubles with his wife. He finds himself in challenging combat situations with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, but he is most distressed when he discovers that one of his roommates is rabidly anti-war. Following two months in the combat zone, the ship gets a new commanding officerand a new set of problems face Zachery and his shipmates. At first, his new commanding officer distrusts only the five ensigns in the ensign locker, but eventually he begins to distrust the entire wardroom. What happens next has a huge affect on the entire crewultimately resulting in the ship returning home to San Diego. Now Zachery must face the anti-war sentiments at home, and it may be the last straw for him.
