This family history begins with Rognwald, Count of Maerc, Normandy, born about 850 A.D.. After 1070, records beginning with William de la Heuse place the family in England, mostly Somerset. William Hewes was born 1 March 1623 at St. Decumans parish, North Somerset, England. In 1657, William married Deborah Pedrick (born ca. 1640 and died after 1705). In the early 1670s William and Deborah Hewes immigrated to New Jersey. He died in Salem County, New Jersey, in 1698. Their descendants have spread across the United States.

Hugh Harry (d.1708), a Quaker, immigrated in 1684 from Wales to Philadelphia. He married Elizabeth Brinton in 1686, and settled on land in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and elsewhere. Includes direct lineage of Harry ancestry (partly through nobility) to 742 A.D. in Wales, England, France and elsewhere.

Benjamin Hawley (1703-1782) was born in London, England to Thomas Hawley and Frances Maling. In 1722 Benjamin immigrated to America and settled in Pennsylvania where he was active in his Quaker faith. Benjamin married Dinah Gabiter and they became the parents of six children. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, New York, Iowa, Arizona and other parts of the United States.
