This SAE Standard specifies the guidance and the requirements for the electrodeposition of zinc-nickel alloy coatings on a range of metallic substrates for the provision of corrosion resistance to steel components and galvanic compatibility between some bi-metallic contacting surfaces. AMS03-040A stabilizes this document because this document contains mature technology that is not expected to change and thus no further revisions are anticipated.

A discussion of basic aspects of electrodeposition like metal deposition from simple salts, from solutions of complex salts, principle of alloy deposition and electrochemical corrosion is given in chapter I. Bath optimization and effect of addition agents by Hull cell method and deposits characterization is given in the following two chapters. Presence of poly ethylene glycol in the zinc bath produced semi bright milky deposits with high cathode current efficiency and throwing power. The corrosion resistance is evaluated by potentiometric method and neutral salt spray methods. The structural characterization by XRD and SEM is also given. The bromide based zinc-nickel alloy bath produced deposits with better adhesion, micro hardness and better corrosion resistance. A selected number of references are given at the end.
