Evaluation is ubiquitous. Indeed, it isn't an exaggeration to say that we assess actions, character, events, and objects as good, cruel, beautiful, etc., almost every day of our lives. Although evaluative judgement - for instance, judging that an institution is unjust - is usually regarded as the paradigm of evaluation, it has been thought by some philosophers that a distinctive and significant kind of evaluation is perceptual. For example, in aesthetics, some have claimed that adequate aesthetic judgement must be grounded in the appreciator's first hand-hand perceptual experience of the item judged. In ethics, reference to the existence and importance of something like ethical perception is found in a number of traditions, for example, in virtue ethics and sentimentalism. This volume brings together philosophers working in aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, and value theory to investigate what we call 'evaluative perception'. Specifically, they engage with (1) Questions regarding the existence and nature of evaluative perception: Are there perceptual experiences of values? If so, what is their nature? Are perceptual experiences of values sui generis? Are values necessary for certain kinds of perceptual experience? (2) Questions about epistemology: Can evaluative perceptual experiences ever justify evaluative judgements? Are perceptual experiences of values necessary for certain kinds of justified evaluative judgements? (3) Questions about value theory: Is the existence of evaluative perceptual experience supported or undermined by particular views in value theory? Are particular views in value theory supported or undermined by the existence of evaluative perceptual experience?

"Previous research indicates that Helmet Mounted Displays (HMDs) using stereoscopic presentation techniques induce greater Simulator Sickness symptomology than a biocular presentation. However, neither of these presentation methods takes into account the different perspective each eye normally receives as a result of each eye turning to fixate on objects in different depth planes, referred to as vergence movements. The present study examined the effects of a vergence algorithm moderating the stereoscopic display in an HMD in a within subjects comparison to standard stereoscopic and biocular presentations. The experiment used a distance estimation task and the other major variable was incidence of simulator sickness. The experiment task required moving through rooms in a virtual environment and providing distance estimates to different objects. The findings suggest that most participants would recover more easily from simulator sickness symptoms with a vergence viewing condition. However, because this study shows a wide range of individual differences, a vergence adjustment to stereoscopic presentation should not be expected to eliminate the number of participants withdrawing, but only to reduce their number when repeated exposures are involved. Also, the range of individual differences indicates a need for multiple measures of symptomology not only to help identify individuals who are under duress, but to better assess when they have adapted. One candidate measure of duress is dark vergence, based on its objective scaling, its relevance to adaptation, and its correlation with 55 sub-scale scores."--DTIC.

Originally published in 1987, this title aimed to present an eclectic and biased account of the status of perception-action relationships in various fields at the time. The chapters can be divided into three sections. The first focuses on motor control, a neglected topic in the past and hence deserving the role of the starting point of this volume. In addition motor control provides a good background to discuss the clear sensory and perceptual effects. However, motor processes are also highly relevant to perception, which was usually less emphasized in the literature at the time. Therefore a special section is devoted to motor processes in perception together with the issue of integrating information from different sources. The book concludes with a section on attention and selection of perceptual information for subsequent action.
